(also, students—there’s a lot of talk about elite colleges right now. You’re more than a name on your degree, even when it doesn’t feel like it. And: community colleges, trade schools, state schools, or opting not to go to college at all are. not. lesser. YOU are not lesser.)

So sorry you experienced that; it's completely unfair (as you know!). Shout out to your mom, what an amazing parent!

Even if we were to make college admissions “equitable,” it’s unlikely the frenzy will end as long as the rich continue to hoard more of the wealth and the rest live in economic insecurity and admission into the top colleges is one of only means of social mobility.

For , I wrote about how the college admissions bribery scandal is as abhorrent as the legal, college-approved version that happens every day. Students deserve better.

No way! Such a small world, I love it. I'm really grateful for how my experience there turned out. I was able to work full-time and they placed a lot of emphasis on work done beyond the classroom.

Please read this. This issue isn't just about bribery or parents donating buildings to get their kids into an Ivy League school, but the structural issues in our education system that give disproportionate advantages to wealthy & white students from day one in elementary school.

It's amazing the level of peace that is established once I realized I would probably be nervous all the time, about everything. Anxious peace!

In 8th grade my parents bought me a cello. In 9th grade my parents sent me to debate camp at Harvard. In 10th grade we hired a college consultant. In 11th grade I took an "ACT prep class". Wealthy families have been paying for access to top college for decades.

I agree with this except that . . . the higher education inequality magnification machine is no more abhorrent than many other systems of inequality, beginning with school districts, preschool, health care, the list goes endlessly on, boats against the corner, born back... oops!

Absolutely with you, Professor Davidson! It starts incredibly early and is in virtually every system. Wish I'd had more space to get into that here!

This newest admissions scandal is infuriating, but the ongoing, perfectly legal one that lets wealthy families pay for the things that lead to greater chances of admission hurts even more, writes

Also, big thanks to my friend & expert , who generously shared this excellent thought: “If you had to design a system that would give rich, white kids the best odds of getting into prestigious colleges and universities, look no further than the current system.”
