Just to check. The slogan just announced for Benny Gans' Knesset campaign, "Yisrael lifnei ha-Kol," if you translate that to English, you get something like "Israel First," and if you translated it to German, you get something like "Israel über alles," yes?

Yes, I think you're exactly right. Which is why the sort of borderless, John-Lennon-ish universalism is incompatible, I think, not just with Zionism but with Judaism in any of its many traditional forms. Of course, Chabon is saying, let's neologize Judaism, & give it new meaning.
