Extra spending can't be funded by Brexit dividend.
1) Govt has accepted Brexit will *weaken* public finances by £15bn pa
2) Financial settlement with EU plus commitments to replace EU funding already uses up all of our EU contributions in 2022
There is no Brexit dividend

Extra NHS funding at 3.4% p.a. means rises over next 5 years higher than over last 8, but still below long run average.
Extra £20bn means higher borrowing or higher taxes. Former incompatible with manifesto commitment.
Means health spending accelerating as % of total spending pic.twitter.com/yjJsjV03Uv

V interesting by @PJTheEconomist: ‘combination of lack of private insur mkt & lack of public provision [for social care] could lead people to save money just in case. If happening, it is incredibly inefficient and potentially very damaging to the wellbeing of those concerned.’ twitter.com/pjtheeconomist…

And here I am in today's @FT making the point again. You can fund additional spending on the NHS from higher taxes or higher borrowing, but not from a Brexit dividend that does not exist ft.com/content/bbfde9… pic.twitter.com/1NhgWi3km6

Most poverty now within working households. Almost zero union coverage among lowest paid private sector workers. Pay still lower than a decade ago. More self employed and their incomes down more than earnings of employees. NLW alone can’t fix this. twitter.com/fletcherr/stat…

Because councils more dependent on government grants have lost the most money social care spending has fallen much more in the most deprived local authorities than in more affluent areas pic.twitter.com/AGpYMCrChv

New from @TheIFS ifs.org.uk/uploads/BN240.… Spending per capita by councils on adult social care has fallen nearly 10% since 2010. Spending on other council services per person has fallen more than 30%. pic.twitter.com/HJCkxqdoP9

One perfect way to round off #EmpathyDay would be to listen to @frankcottrell_b here: bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0b… He truly understands the power of #Empathy and how to live by it. And he is my final #ReadforEmpathy recommendation (every single one of his books). @EmpathyLabUK

Tune in at 3:30pm to see @ChrisGiles_ @PJTheEconomist and @jathers give evidence on the use of the RPI (described as a 'very poor measure of inflation' by the National Statistician, but yet still used for hiking up rail fares)

Long term perspective on spending on benefits for children is important. Rose hugely during 2000s as tax credits were introduced and scaled up, so despite big cuts since 2010 system is still much more generous than it was at the turn of the century. twitter.com/TheIFS/status/…

To be fair this means 5 in 6 don’t own a second home! But I agree it’s an astonishing statistic.
