My crowning professional achievement is still the fact that a google search for "Amanda Phillips dicks" leads straight to me. This is no small accomplishment in a world in which Philip K. Dick also exists. Thx for helping me live the dream.

I really dig this quote on the value of "bad" games from : "Insights can also come from 'bad' games, broadly conceived: easy games, boring games, ugly games, amateurish games, glitchy games, experimental games, and unfinished games."

I didn't actually think I'd ever get here, but I guess if you dump enough time into Binding of Isaac you will eventually fill up those post-it notes...

Book should be out next March, but I'm happy to send you the chapter draft if you're interested. Death porn stuff is second book project, but very first musings on it are published here:

Anyway, I actually started reading BE because I'm interested in the pornography of death for my next project. It's given me much more to think about. :)

I'm also struck by the designation of "adult entertainment," which is how folks describe a game like Grand Theft Auto when defending it from parents, but it also serves to give the game a pass for sexist and racist content because it's all for adults.

For me, the most striking difference is that you detail an overeager response by feminists to compensate for criticism. In our case, feminist (and feminized) approaches to VG get lumped in w moral panics, then put in back seat while formal (and tech) analysis takes the wheel.

I'm looking forward to talking about my forthcoming book, Video Games Have Always Been Queer, at the inaugural Feminist Book Celebration at UCLA. There's a bunch of great new work represented!

WHITE ACADEMICS & WRITERS: when you are invited to participate in an event, ask who else is participating. If there are no writers or academics of color who have confirmed participation, politely decline & suggest that the organizers invite writers or academics of color instead.

I published an article in Game Studies journal over the winter break, and it's free to access! If you're interested in video games and representation, please check it out! The short title is "Queer Games After Empathy."

I have a teeny baby account of it in one of the chapters of my forthcoming book. But I'm very interested in disciplinary narratives! Perhaps I'll expand it more someday.

Indeed! I'm struck by the narrative(s) of the discipline(s): censorship fears, subsequent academic boosterism resulting in critique (and particularly racial politics) dropping out of the conversation.

Reading 's account of porn studies in Beyond Explicit and struck by how easily one could substitute "video game" for "porn" throughout and still be quite accurate.
