I've plotted 'holocaust' vs 'genocide' again on Google NGram, this time with zero smoothing and case sensitivity. The trend is the same as before, but the decline in the frequency of 'Holocaust' (capitalised) in the 2000s (especially 2008) is even more marked.

Thanks, good point. I also realised I need to adjust the smoothing.

NGram of the Day: Armenian vs Cambodian vs Rwandan Genocides (1978-2008). Use of 'Armenian Genocide' ballooned with the collapse of the Soviet bloc, remaining significantly higher than mentions of 'Rwandan Genocide' (2nd most frequent) and 'Cambodian Genocide' (3rd) throughout.

And about time too! "The UN is calling for an end to restrictions that prohibit nonprofit groups from rescuing the migrants at sea. It also urges the European Union to end its support of the Libyan Coast Guard."

I taught a R2P class with Jennifer Welsh. She's the most awesome, sober scholar on this topic. See also her comment on Rajan Menon's recent book on R2P in the Journal of Genocide Research:

NGram of the Day: 'Holocaust' vs 'Genocide'. The frequency of both terms were roughly equal from the 1950s through 1975, when use of 'holocaust' skyrocketed before dropping off in the 2000s. The use of 'genocide' accelerated in the 1990s and almost closed the gap by 2008.

I wrote a book! It's about how the things which connect us can divide us at the same time. It's about and and how the globalisation of news polarises people. It's out on my birthday so order an amazing gift for YOU and ME here:

Can’t believe is still thinking of partnering with these people. Management need to stop dodging questions and tell us why they think this is OK

The shooter had “remove kebab” on his firearms. The meme “remove kebab” originated with a video of Serbs in 1995 celebrating the Bosnian genocide & Karadzic.

And we at the Journal of Genocide Research have been publishing authors like Lyndall Ryan on the topic for years: "Untangling Aboriginal resistance and the settler punitive expedition: the Hawkesbury River frontier in New South Wales, 1794–1810"
