Brexit now risks becoming for EU a new instance of the eurozone crisis - where the impression of drift severely dents its international prestige. Certainly the view in China: why can’t a powerful bloc set a path and reach a solution in a timely, effective manner?

This purely passive approach to crises has served the EU very poorly in the past. So far it has worked for Brexit, but it won’t work forever, it may have already broken down in fact

Of course if the EU tried to develop a position in Brexit, divisions would explode - which is why it has refrained from doing so

Does the EU want to preserve the closest possible economic relationship with UK? Does it try to reverse Brexit? Does it want an ambitious FTA of the kind it has with like minded countries? Does it want close economic ties without an FTA like it has with the Us? Who knows...

Rather odd to say the EU is united on Brexit. Would be more accurate to say the EU is not divided on Brexit in the exact sense that it has no position on Brexit

The recent Eurasian strategy announced by the EU has three parts: 1. Connectivity between Europe and Asia is important 2. It is extremely unlikely but not completely impossible that EU will invest some money in this 3. Connectivity betwen Europe and Asia should folow EU rules

Tell me again why withdrawing from Iran deal was a catastrophe? As expected, Iran has not resumed nuclear program, sanctions being almost universally applied, economic pressure mounts in Iran, democratizing forces getting more powerful...

Think this is right. Both sides clear on what they don’t want, but not so clear on what they do.

At beginning of 2017 a very senior official in Brussels told me what the critical Brexit issue was: “The British PM cannot reach the end of the process and claim victory.” Start with this and Brexit will become clearer to you.

That seems to me the core of the problem. Difficult to negotiate when one side is not interested, keeps sulking and insists on not saying a word about what it wants
