“Campaigning on your identity?” No. Definitely not. Nothing about my campaign — my platform, my website, the way I spend my time on this campaign — none of it supports that idea. And if the claim is opportunism, that’s also illogical, because my district just isn’t very Jewish.

My mom lived in Colombia via my father (my father is the Colombian immigrant here) but she was born in the US! To be clear I have never misrepresented that fact in any interview I’ve given. I think it’s even in the article.

It really bends over backwards to try to put words in my mouth, instead of seeking to understand that my US-born mother and Colombian-born father had two different kids and raised us between two different places. I don’t present myself as an immigrant nor as a non-citizen.

yeah I virtually never speak publicly about my religion unless media explicitly ask me about it. And that’s largely because I don’t enjoy subjecting myself to Tablet-esque race science, as a person from a mixed background

My father died when I was 18 and the writer did not even interview me. I’ve never expected bigots like this guy to affirm my Jewishness; what’s surprising is their sudden obsession with it—and your willingness to indulge them. I’m running for State Senate, not Chief Rabbi.

We have less than three weeks until election day, running a grassroots campaign in a local race with a skeleton crew. This guy dug for weeks, then sent us an email a few hours before he published this article? And claims that’s due diligence? It’s a fan fiction hit piece.

They finally contacted the campaign (not me directly, though they easily could have) this week and demanded an interview. We promptly responded saying to ask questions. They then didn’t follow-up with us until *this afternoon*, via one email that I only saw after they published.

Happy to speak about it with you more at length. I gave a pretty long interview to the reporter who wrote this: jta.org/2018/08/23/new…
and all of it accurately represents what I said. The Tablet reporter deliberately did the opposite.

The same writer called my mother, and when she refused to talk to him, he threatened to publish her personal information.
Through all this, the writer never contacted me with an inquiry until today, via email, a few hours before he published this baseless smear of an article..

A “well-researched article?” The author of this piece anonymously called my older brother, pretended to be someone else (my brother said he thought it was a prank call), and asked him invasive questions about his life and about our dead dad.

Hi. You could just @ me next time if you were genuinely curious about this. To every reporter who’s ever asked, to every person, I have always said that I was not raised religious, that I didn’t have a bat mitzvah, that *I am* Jewish, but never would claim that my big brother is.

I'm busy at events tonight but I'll be rooting for @SalazarSenate18 in her debate with Dilan. We need new progressive leadership in Albany, and Senators who aren't tied to big real estate money so we can finally take on the stranglehold NYC real estate has on NY politics!

Yeah man, I agree. A lot of us live in buildings with bad landlords, and the laws empower developers over tenants. You seem to want to blame tenants who are trying to fight this.

As a candidate, my address is public record: I live in Bushwick, not Bed-Stuy. I’m a tenant in a 3-unit walk-up that was built 4 years ago. There is no doorman, no luxury amenities. You could easily check this stuff instead of just making it up.

Charvey, remember a few years ago when you went on record in *support* of broken windows policing? Same year you lost to Assembly Member Davila, and only got 16% of the vote? Also, we itemized *all* contributions. Try to keep up! Maybe you and Videsh should both log-off.

I was raised by a single mom who didn’t have a college degree. My father didn’t graduate from high school. He died when I was 18. Then I had the courage to fight for my own education — and became a progressive advocate as a result. Senator Dilan doesn’t believe in anything.

Senator Dilan was previously a Republican registrar. He was nearly thrown off the ballot for it.
And decades later, Dilan still endorsed Republican Rudy Giuliani for Mayor of New York. What a hypocrite.
