colleges are telling students that there are 4 jobs for every qualified nurse? My child is one of those students that pays for petrol when commuting 3 hours to go to unpaid placement, degree is costing a fortune no wonder they leave the country afterwards

As of Sept 2018, we have 227 fewer staff nurses compared with Dec 2017. Extra beds = extra nurses. But there's no prospect of that without a pay correction. Here's our full release:

Why is overcrowding happening? Many reasons, but for us - understaffing is a big culprit. The HSE simply cannot recruit and retain enough nurses on these low wages. Without changing that, hospital capacity can't grow and that won't change.

Smaller hospitals were badly hit too. South General had 474 patients on trolleys in October - equivalent to nearly 3 times their total hospital capacity.

Limerick was worst-hit, with 1,045 patients on trolleys. 5 other hospitals saw over 500 patients on trolleys this month: - : 716 - : 647 - : 572 - : 519 - : 512

This has been the worst-ever October for hospital overcrowding in Ireland. 9,055 patients were forced to wait without a bed in October 2018 - a 124% increase from when we started counting in 2006.

Like the public health service, agencies were having trouble recruiting nurses and midwives. So they raised pay to attract more. Ministers take note!
