“Please speak up. I’ve got helicopter-induced hearing loss” works for me.

I'm straight in there with "Nope, Sorry, deaf as a post! What did you say?" while pointing at my hearing aids. This usually gets either an apology from a mumbler, or a laugh and a learning conversation. I get that it can be hard work at times.

Cannot afford to be shy about it. You are the best advocate for yourself. Showing that you are uncomfortable being your hearing impaired self means the world is right to be uncomfortable with you. Mind you, people will treat you as you treat yourselfbut - be honest be bett

My husband & work colleagues know when I haven’t heard properly cos I get a blank look as I’m trying to work out what they’ve said. It’s taken me a long time to get used to telling people but you still get those who think it’s funny to say ‘what’ or ‘pardon’ when I tell them.

I discuss my hearing loss like I discuss the weather, we just have to get on with it. Helps if a little humour comes into the conversation.

I have no problem discussing it in a professional setting and am completely upfront. However, in social settings I'm almost embarrassed about it and tend to try to get by without explaining. First dates in noisy environments where I'm not willing to explain are always awkward.

I tire of asking for clarification of what I have missed but I mostly always disclose my hearing loss. To not do so invariably causes me more suffering and also denies the opportunity for increasing someone’s understanding about living with hearing loss and how to support me

Telling people about my loss often opens up the conversation and can result in me helping them as much as them helping me. Always have AOHL leaflets with me.

Feeling uncomfortable about it, means that there's something bad. More "younger" deafned and hard hearing adults should come out and positively influence that hearing loss it's not an age thing.

I tend to mention it early on in any conversation with someone new. Apart from anything else it explains why I want to place people on my hearing side or why I struggle with taking numbers or postcodes on the phone. Saves frustration on both sides.

All sections in this article totally resonate with me. HL is such a personal thing. I can't stand it when people guess, or start asking me questions about it, or my voice, when we've just met.

I used to but not anymore. It’s not easy as some people think you are using it as an excuse but I think that is down to a lack of understanding. Now I am happy to talk about it to help educate others into what it’s like living with hearing loss 😊

No. I always tell people. Often end up giving out How’s your hearing leaflet and and suggesting they look at website.
