Instructions for Uninstalling Java
The instructions below will help you remove a version of Java that could not be removed with the Uninstall Tool.
Note: You should only follow these instructions if you personally own the system in question. For Company-owned systems please contact your company for instructions.
Removing all versions of Java might cause some applications to stop working. We would recommend installing an up-to-date JRE to run Java applications and contacting the application vendor if some application will not run with the most current version.
Uninstall Instructions
You can uninstall Java manually in the same way as you would uninstall any other software from your Windows computer. You may need administrator privileges to remove programs.
Java may appear in the program list as J2SE, Java 2, Java SE or Java Runtime Environment.
Windows 10
- Click on the Windows icon at bottom-left corner of the screen.
- Click on the Settings.
- In the Settings window, start typing Control Panel in the search box.
- When the Control Panel appears in Search results click on it to open.
- Choose Uninstall a Program from the Programs category.
- Select the program to uninstall and then click its Uninstall button.
- Click Yes to confirm the program uninstall.
Windows 8
- Right-click on the screen at bottom-left corner and choose the Control Panel from the pop-up menu.
- When the Control Panel appears, choose Uninstall a Program from the Programs category.
- Select the program to uninstall and then click its Uninstall button.
- Click Yes to confirm the program uninstall.
Windows 7
- Click Start
- Select Control Panel
- Select Programs
- Click Programs and Features
- Select the program you want to uninstall by clicking on it, and then click the Uninstall button.
Windows Vista
- Click Start
- Select Control Panel
- Select Programs
- Click Programs and Features
- Select the program you want to uninstall by clicking on it, and then click the Uninstall button.
Windows XP
- Click Start
- Select Control Panel
- Click the Add/Remove Programs control panel icon
- The Add/Remove control panel displays a list of software on your system, including any Java software products that are on your computer. Select any that you want to uninstall by clicking on it, and then click the Remove button.
Windows 2000
- Click Start
- Select Control Panel
- Click the Add/Remove Programs control panel icon
- The Add/Remove control panel displays a list of software on your system, including any Java software products that are on your computer. Select any that you want to uninstall by clicking on it, and then click the Remove button.
Windows 98
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click the Control Panel.
- On the Install/Uninstall tab, click the Java version you want to uninstall, and then click Add/Remove.
- When you are prompted to continue with the Uninstall, click Yes.
Windows ME
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click the Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs.
- On the Install/Uninstall tab, click the Java version you want to uninstall, and then click Add/Remove.
- When you are prompted to continue with the Uninstall, click Yes.
