Without making the move towards a supported PHP version, WordPress will lose connection to current PHP more and more, causing more developers to move away and thus eventually users as well, so that it possibly vanishes more or less at some point (that would probably be way in the future, but let's make sure it never happens).
A modern version keeps it interesting and viable for iterations in a long term.
