Try putting the drive to sleep in Linux* and then wake it up; this should clear the security frozen state.
The security freeze should not stop you from installing the operating system or partitioning but only prevents changes to the drives security features, such as setting up the drive’s password.

@joe_intel I have secure erased once to unfreeze the drive. on next reboot, it got locked again, possibly by BIOS. If I unfreeze and complete the installation, is that ok? I assume on each boot BIOS will lock/freeze SSD.

1 of 1 people found this helpfulThe Security Freeze state only prevents changes to the security settings but if the drive is locked then you will not have access or be able to make any changes to the drive.
The BIOS and OS will put the drive in the Security Freeze state most of the time. Most Linux versions will not put in this state when coming out of sleep.
The drive should only be in the Locked state if the drive has an ATA password assigned (either the Master or User password). You may need to make sure the correct password is entered when the system boots.

@joe_intel: yes sir, hdparm tool shows that drive is not locked "not locked" in the output. So, Can I ignore the "frozen" message from hdparm? the drive is not locked, but frozen. can I continue installation? I am using Intel DH67CL1 Motherboard in UEFI mode.

@joe_intel: Ok sir. I will try to install disgregarding "frozen" state shown by hdparm. Motherboard Intel DH67CL1 uses latest BIOS v160 from Intel site. but, I have found a link which says Intel DH67BL/CL board keeps security freeze lock SSD drive each time UEFI/BIOS sees it. As per the below link, Intel has not yet released a bug fix BIOS release so as to fully enable SSD encryption etc. please go through below link: http://sstahlman.blogspot.in/2014/07/hardware-fde-with-intel-ssd-330-on.html I bought this board on 2012 july or so and it is in warranty. and I am no expert in modifying BIOS files as explained in above link. Can we expect a BIOS/UEFI release with more options so as to enable/disable Security freeze lock and such settings? I know this mainboard(DH67CL) is meant for average computer user who will not play with advanced BIOS settings. however, in circumstances like mine(SSD frozen), it will be great if we have an option to disable security lock. besides, this BIOS's UEFI mode is just a "enable/disable" option. some other options(access) is welcome. Thank you for the support.

I got a reply from above blog(sstahlman). He is telling that "frozen" message from hdparm means harddrive/ssd encryption will not work due to the Intel DH67BL/CL BIOS limitations. So, I can format and install on this SSD, but can not expect encryption support. I hope this serve as a answer to many who are confused like me because of this "frozen" state shown by SSD tools. "not locked, but frozen" means you can install on the SSD, but cannot encrypt, because BIOS/UEFI disables it

Thank you for sharing your results.
Perhaps you can try other means to encrypt the drive since the Intel® DH67CL Desktop Board does not offer support for Hard Drive password.
