What is an ad group?
Arrow down iconAd groups are part of a new campaign structure to make it easier for you to organize, optimize, and manage your campaigns.
Until today, ad groups had only been available via the API. In our UI experience, Twitter’s campaign structure had consisted of two levels — campaigns and Tweets. Our new campaign structure now consists of three levels: campaigns, ad groups, and Tweets. If you are already using ad groups via the API, you will now be able to see ad group performance in your Twitter ads dashboard.
Campaigns correspond to each of your advertising goals, like building brand awareness or driving web traffic. They’re designed to help you optimize and measure results for each objective across multiple ad groups and Tweets.
Each campaign can feature multiple ad groups, each which can have its own budget and schedule. You can organize each ad group by any combination of audience segment, bid level or creative type. This will help you control the amount they spend on each audience, decide their flighting schedule, and measure their performance more easily. Twitter will auto optimize delivery to the best-performing Tweet in an ad group.

How to create new campaigns with ad groups
Arrow down iconYou will now need to enter in “new C1”, “new C2”, “new C3”, etc in chronological order for each new campaign in the Campaign ID column. Pro tip: Each new campaign will automatically create a new adgroup, so it is advised to add an ad group name within the campaign row.
Once you’ve created your new campaigns, insert new rows below each campaign for each additional ad group you want to build. Associate each of these new ad groups with the correct campaign by matching the “new C1” “new C2” campaign ID (in blue below).
- Leave the Ad group IDs blank & create a new Ad group name. The system will recognize an ad group is associated with a particular campaign via the nesting order & matching your campaign ID.
- In the example below, @baristabar has created two new ad groups for each campaign (one within the main campaign row in red, one as an additional nested ad group in blue). Pro tip: ad groups must have the same campaign objective as their parent campaign.
After entering in targeting criteria & Tweet IDs for your new campaigns & ad groups, save & import. Upon upload the Ads editor will create IDs for your new campaigns & ad groups.

How to add new ad groups to existing campaigns
Arrow down iconIn the ads editor, insert a new row below the campaign you want your ad group nested under. You must create ad groups underneath their associated campaign, otherwise the spreadsheet will not validate successfully. In the example below, I’ve inserted two new rows (5 & 6), to create two ad groups for the Followers campaign in row 4 above it.
- Insert the campaign ID & funding source ID for the campaign you want your ad groups associated with. In the example above, you would enter in “i5394759” into the campaign ID column & “i31248553” for the funding source ID. Ad group funding source must match the funding source of its parent campaign.
- Leave the ad group ID column blank. Upon upload, the Ads editor will create new ad group IDs for you.
- Ensure your ad group objectives match their parent campaign objective.

To copy an ad group from one campaign to another:
Arrow down iconAd groups may not be shared across campaigns, but you may copy an ad group from one campaign to another. In the example below, let’s imagine your coffee enthusiasts ad group was performing well for your Online Coffee Sale campaign, and you wanted to see how the same audience performed for your In-Store Discount campaign.
- Copy the ad group row and paste directly under the campaign you want to add it to.
- Update the campaign ID to match the new campaign you’re adding your ad group to.
- Leave the campaign start date & new Ad Group ID blank. Upon upload, the ads editor will create a new Ad Group ID
- Change your ad group name to something new. It’s suggested to include the campaign name in your naming convention
- Update your ad group start time
- Make any additional bid, budget or targeting changes, then save spreadsheet & upload.

To copy a campaign and its ad groups to create a new campaign
Arrow down iconCopy the parent campaign (row) and all its ad group rows:
Follow steps to create a new campaign & ad groups noted above. If you change objectives for the campaign level, you must change objectives for all associated ad groups:
-
To delete an ad group
Arrow down iconTo delete an ad group, enter in “del” in front of the ad group ID in the ad group ID column. Example: To delete ad group i8394029, you would enter in “del i8394029” to the ad group ID column. Upon upload, the system will delete this ad group. Note: you need a space between “del and the ad group ID”.
