Abstract Section 108(h) has not been utilized by libraries and archives, in part because of the uncertainty over definitions (e.g. “normal commercial exploitation”), determination of the eligibility window (last twenty years of the copyright term of published works), and how to communicate the information in the record to the general public. This paper seeks to explore the elements necessary to implement the Last Twenty exception, otherwise known as Section 108(h) and create a Last Twenty...

This item has as tarball of 10,000 files, each with a large number of json records in it. For each non-dark item in the Internet Archive's collection (according to metamgr), we have a record of the metadata in json, then files.xml in json. There if also a file with just the list of identifiers. This is a form of record-of-our-times so we might, in the future, be able to say: we had this file in the archive at this time because we have the hash recorded here. -brewster time cat...

(summary by Steward Brand ) Why nature is rebounding Over the last 40 years, in nearly every field, human productivity has decoupled from resource use, Ausubel began. Even though our prosperity and population continue to increase, the trends show decreasing use of energy, water, land, material resources, and impact on natural systems (except the ocean). As a result we are seeing the beginnings of a global restoration of nature. America tends to be the leader in such trends, and the “American...

These are test images taken with a Nikon 1 J5 to compare in-camera compression vs linux based. imagemagick was used to take the .NEF (raw) to -convert.jp2 and -convert.jpg with default settings. the 003.jpg file came from the camera. I did a screen shot of zooming in on these and I did not see much of a benefit by going from NEF to jp2 or to jpg. so from this, seems the camera does a good enough job. -brewster

Digital data is vulnerable. Yet entire libraries are shredded and lost to budget cuts, because we assume everything can be found online. But is that really true? For the first time in history, we have the technological means to save our entire past, yet it seems to be going up in smoke. Will we suffer from...

To test how to scan LP covers, we tried an informal test of resolution. (lighting was not a part of this). david rinehart took the photos of 2 random lps. these are on a Nokon D600 24Megapixel camera in raw format. macintoshes seem to know how to display these.

Documentary by Brian Knappenberger. The Internet’s Own Boy follows the story of programming prodigy and information activist Aaron Swartz. From Swartz's help in the development of the basic internet protocol RSS to his co-founding of Reddit, his fingerprints are all over the internet. But it was Swartz's groundbreaking work in social justice and political organizing combined with his aggressive approach to information access that ensnared him in a two-year legal nightmare. It was...

The author Jessica Conrad came through! After an interview for Commoner Magazine, she gave me the audio and transcript that she used to write it. I have asked this of many many writers, but few ever have. Hope it is useful in some way, maybe just to see how journalism was done in 2013. Resulting article and Archived version

Ebook by FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler Net Effects looks at the history of three network revolutions – the printing press, the railroad, and the telegraph and telephony – and how the fourth network revolution – digital communications – will be informed by those experiences. It was this process that led the Chairman to develop what he calls the three “prisms” for looking at communications policy: ensuring that our networks promote economic growth; preserving the fundamental values that...

Brewster Kahle’s short video for the occasion of the wake of Michio Tomita of Japan. Michio Tomita, with three other friends, began compiling five out-of-copyright Japanese books in text form in 1997, greatly inspired by Project Gutenberg as well as Voyager Company’s Expand Books. They named the library as Aozora Bunko, or “Blue Sky Library”, because they wanted the library to have an unlimited future. The volunteer group led by him now has several hundred editors, and compiles more...

The WARC (Web Archive) file format is intended to supersede the "ARC" file format and is now used by many libraries and archives, including the Internet Archive. This is the specification in draft form which might still be useful because it is available for free. ISO standards, unlike Internet Engineering Task Force standards, cost money .

Paper comparing European torture law of the 13th-18thC and American 20thC Plea Bargaining by Yale Law Professor John H. Langbein (then from University of Chicago) 1978 Abstract: In this essay I shall address the modem American system of plea bargaining from a perspective that must appear bizarre, although I hope to persuade you that it is illuminating. I am going to contrast plea bargaining with the medieval European law of torture. My thesis is that there are remarkable parallels in...
