In Fallout 4, when there is no one in your sight, a short press on VATS button will do nothing.

A long press, however, will activate an empty VATS. Is there a use for this?

  • Long press (Hold) VATS button when there is nobody around. Empty VATS

  • Long Press (Hold) VATS button when there is friends behind me. VATS with friends behind

  • Short press VATS button with friends behind me. Short press VATS

A short tap on the VATS button will bring up VATS if there are enemies around.

I can't recall if it works if they are behind you or if they need to be generally in front of you. Either way, holding down the button will force VATS to come up even if there are no obvious targets, allowing you to check for certain.

This means that you need to hold VATS to target friendlies, including friendly mines. I sometimes target friendlies to check how many shots I have on my AP bar when comparing weapon attachments.

Even if there are no targets around, friendly or otherwise, bring up VATS allows you to confirm this.

Additionally, it slows time so you can observe something at a slower speed. Maybe an explosion.

I did not think about slowing time. Thanks. – Bebs 2 days ago

Thinking about this more, I can't recall for certain if it will open on a tap if there are only friendly targets. That's something to check. – DCShannon 2 days ago

@Bebs Okay, I think I remember better after seeing that. – DCShannon 2 days ago

There is also the VANS perk which gives the quest marker in VATS. I haven't taken the perk myself but I would assume this is how you would use it. – VanBuzzKill 2 days ago

In addition to the other answers, using VATS out of combat activates a glowing trail leading to your closest activated quest objective when you put a point in the VANS perk:

Let Vault-Tec guide you! The path to your closest quest target is displayed in V.A.T.S.

Here's a screenshot of what it looks like in-game:

+1, I've never used that perk. That's a great point. If you had that perk you would probably be opening VATS without targets all the time. – DCShannon 2 days ago

+1 but I prefer going straight through the mountains :-) – Bebs 2 days ago

@DCShannon: only for a short while, then you will discover that this feature too often does not work properly and abandon it. – PlasmaHH 11 hours ago

Using VATS outside of combat and attempting to shuffle through "targets" will reveal things you may not have noticed as the targeting will shift to anything targetable by VATS, such as mines or far-off enemies, which would give you time to think of a plan of attack (or know to avoid said area).

Whenever traversing buildings or enemy strongholds, a quick VATS check every so often will help prevent you from walking straight into a minefield.

The single click does that. You don't need to hold it. – DCShannon 2 days ago

@DCShannon what do you mean? – Vemonus 2 days ago

The question is specifically about why you would want to be able to open VATS in the absence of targets, which happens when you hold down the button. Listing things that happen when you tap the button doesn't answer the question. If there are targets around, you can just tap the button. – DCShannon 2 days ago

@DCShannon, even if there are faraway, non-hostile targets, VATS doesn't always immediately target them when you open it up. Also, just because you don't see any targets doesn't mean there aren't any. Attempting to shuffle through targets will highlight anything that is targetable by VATS. Most commonly, this helps you locate (and avoid/disarm) mines, but it can also be used to see faraway NPCs, hostile or friendly. Maybe it's just me, but I've always held down the VATS button for it to open, as I've had too many cases where pressing it failed to open it and I died as a result. – Vemonus 2 days ago

@Vemonus A short press tries to lock on to an enemy directly in front of you. A long press activates the VATS vision regardless of what is in front of you and then allows you to cycle through targets and seethe VANS trail. – Reaces 2 days ago
