Issue 3484: Add # of reviews to the Place Details Results
164 people starred this issue and may be notified of changes. Back to list

Reported by [email protected], Jul 17, 2011
Currently the Place Details Results contains the rating of a business which is great. However, it does not show the number of reviews for the place which is a very important piece of information in deciding whether a rating is useful or not. A place with a high rating and high number of reviews is much more valuable than a place with the same rating but low number of reviews.

For example, for the Burma Superstar place page (http://maps.google.com/maps/place?q=burma+superstar&cid=4754924583893187023), the API returns that the place has a rating of 4.0. It would be great it I could get that the 4.0 rating came from 3569 reviews, which is on the place page.

I think the number of reviews is an extremely important part of the data for a place. Especially since the average rating is not computed until the place receives 6-10 reviews. Please implement this ASAP!

My company often gets clients who ask for a full Google review feed on their websites. Can you please implement such parameters or pagination through which I can access full Google Place API's reviews.

Just a heads up, it seems there is an undocumented property "user_ratings_total". It seems to be there at least on the js library when calling getDetails()

Here's where I found that:

It seems the user_ratings_total has been removed from the places details. Wondering if this would be added back into the place details or if there is another way to access this information.

Looks like user_ratings_total was removed on purpose. It was definitely a useful field. Would be great to see it added back in some form.

I would also like to retrieve the total number of reviews. Basically I would like the undocumented "user_ratings_total" result key to be formalized and guaranteed to be returned.

Thanks.

user_ratings_total was a very useful piece of information. Without it, the average rating loses its context. I really hope it'll be re-introduced in some form.

user_ratings_total is a very important field for users to determine if the rating is meaningful or not.

For instance - if provided two restaurants, one rated 4.7 by 2 people and another rated 4.6 by 200 people, which one will you want to give a try? Removing the user_ratings_total, two restaurants 4.7 vs 4.6, which one will you want to give a try then?

Without user_ratings_total, the rating itself simply loses its context. There no base that users can judge if the ratings is trustworthy at all.

So, please seriously consider adding the field back.

Removing this field broke our application Google feed for the 2nd time, thanks Google. We used to get rating and total review count from Google+ pages for businesses. Google removed that, which broke our feed from Google. We switched to using the Google Places API, and user_ratings_total. Then Google removes that as well, again breaking the feed from Google. We pull from 4 other sites, and never have this kind of feed breakage due to some change on their end.

Just as others, yet another vote to bring back user_ratings_total. Really does not make sense why Google would remove this and obscure the amount of reviews from third parties.

The lack of user_ratings_total is crucially affecting the experience of our users since the field has been removed and no user add their places anymore as the total rating is not visible. Could someone confirm if this will be restored and if not what can we do on the API level to get such a number?

Anyone have a phone number to call on this? I don't understand why there are so many requests and no action on adding these back to API data.

Did anyone call in and ask what the status is on it?

Thank you,
Alex

Call Google funny... They clearly do not seem to care. They removed it for a reason, not on accident. It seems to be missing from search as well. It only shows on maps now. I am sure Google is aware, and they seem to really not care. It seems they removed it as it was starting to be used and becoming known. Less than 6 months between comment about the undocumented property, to when it was removed.

Couldn't agree more that the number of reviews is highly important in validating the weight of the overall rating. If I see a five-star overall and can't see the number of reviews behind it, I won't bother trusting it. Too bad for all the businesses who chose Google as their platform for collecting reviews.

I do not think Google will ever bring this back. They are seeming to go a different direction. I cannot wait for Google to get their act together. I do not believe Google even cares. No matter how many voice bring it back, its gone and they do not care.

What should we do? Not rely on Google, but come up with other means as I did some time ago. Use your API Key to get a Google Map for a given location. Then use REGEX to scrape the page for the reviews. I have been doing this for a few months and its working fine. Till they change the format, and I will update my regex.

Here is my code in Java you can use similar REGEX in any language.

// Get the starts reviews
stars = Pattern.compile("\"],[0-9.]+,\"").matcher(line);
reviews = Pattern.compile("\"[0-9,.k]+ reviews\"").matcher(line);

// Filter out anything but numbers, decimal, k for thousands.
stars.group().replaceAll("[^0-9.]+","");
reviews.group().replaceAll("[^0-9.,k]+","");

Happy Friday! Thanks allot Google!!!!!
