Author: Jang Graat

Jang F.M. Graat, Chief Technologist at The Content Era LLC, has almost 3 decades experience in the technical communications industry. After studying Physics, Psychology, and Philosophy, he started on a fast-track career in the high-tech computer industry, working as a systems designer, marketeer, technical author, trainer, consultant and programmer. Jang has delivered countless presentations and training courses around the globe. His talks were always entertaining as well as thought-provoking and met with enthusiasm and often a certain degree of bewilderment. Thinking inside a box is not one of his strengths. After being self-employed for 20 years, he has joined Tom Aldous at The Content Era, where he is developing his often revolutionary ideas into clever solutions. He has done tons of coding in ExtendScript, always trying to make the jobs of technical authors less tedious and more effective. In the first 2 weeks of June, a small but devoted team travelled from Helsinki to Paris to spread the word about modern methods in technical communication. The last event in the tcworld roadshow: Paris. Of course this city is famous for its Eiffel tower – a remarkable feat of engineering, built for the World Exposition in 1889 and expected to last only a couple of years but still standing today. And of course, this is supposed to be the city of […]

Report from Antwerp: TCWorld Roadshow with FrameMaker

Traveling to Antwerp is best done by train, as traffic jams can get really crazy on the ring road and the center of town is maze of tiny streets with lots of traffic lights, trams, buses and zebra crossings with slow pedestrians dragging suitcases or holding up their cameras, oblivious of the stress that is […]

Another week, another part of Europe. Today the tcworld roadshow landed in Eindhoven. This city was a tiny town when the Philips family started a light bulb factory in 1891. The city is still known as the ‘city of lights’ in the Netherlands. Thanks to the enormous amount of educated workforce that was needed by […]

The end of the first week in the tcworld roadshow found us in the Danish capital Copenhagen. The hotel was conveniently close to the airport but a little further away from the center of this beautiful town. I was staying in a small apartment in the North and on my way to the bus that […]

Two days after Helsinki we landed in Stockholm for the second stage in our tour across Northern and Northwestern Europe. The venue was of a totally different style, in a modern hotel conveniently located next to the main railway station. A unique opportunity that we could not pass up was the presence of an ice […]

Making FrameMaker work for you

March 14, 2013December 25, 2015 Jang Graat Leave a comment

Many jobs are tedious, involving a repetitive sequence of commands that must be executed on a large number of almost identical elements in a document. And because they are tedious and feel like a waste of time on the part of the author, attention may decrease, and errors may go unnoticed. This, apart from the […]

Changing the engine without stopping the car (part 2)

February 26, 2013December 24, 2015 Jang Graat 1 Comment

In the first part of this 2-part article, I explained how mixing structured with unstructured content in the same publication process was vital to the success of several conversion projects I have undertaken in the past years. It is simply not feasible for a company to stop for months while rewriting their legacy documentation or converting all […]
