Easily the most talented Tory of recent years. Just a shame that the European issue reached its peak just as Clarke reached his. Another great lecture.

Not all journalism is poor. Top class political analysis with total absence of synthetic rage and smart Alec comments. Steve Richards setting the standards again.

Something highly relevant in these days when people think a new party will magically solve all problems. is the best politcal journalist by a mile. Right at the end of this episode is a great snipper about David Owen.

Thank you for your interest and greatly appreciate your thoughts on the series....I've written about the so called 'centre ground' and the lack of clear definition...I might be doing a series on terms like 'centre' and 'modern' ..their ubiquity and lazy imprecision.

I've just spent several days in Riga talking to Latvian leaders. To hear Jeremy Hunt's comparison of the EU (which has brought Latvia prosperity, security & confidence) to Soviet domination (painful memories of which still traumatise this country) is repulsive, and below him.

Come off it Bernard. The utterly extraordinary thing is the Foreign Secretary comparing the European Union to the Soviet Union. Or do you agree?

I can’t think of any precedent for this. Two former professional heads of the Foreign Office publicly denouncing the language of a serving Foreign Secretary. And this is supposed to be the sensible one, not the clown he succeeded
