We at erdfisch are very excited to announce that the Drupal Business and Community Days will take place in Heidelberg, Germany from 8-10 April 2016.

This is the first in a series of blog postings explaining what we want to achieve with this event. I'll start with our location.

New module: Image widget default image

Single image:
Body:

As part of a client project we recently had the requirement of displaying an image field's default image in the node add form, before the user had uploaded a picture. This seemed simple enough to implement but thinking about it I realized this was quite a generic feature request and that such a module might prove useful for others. Rather by accident I even noticed that Drupal.org itself employs the same feature on user profile pages.

A composer based workflow for Drupal 8

Every developer had a fight once with dependency management of big Drupal projects, which use a couple of modules and maybe one theme with base themes etc.
At the same time there are maybe patches to Drupal core itself, modules are developed internally on some GIT server etc.. It's a pain in the ass to get the code from various places and keep it up to date.

In the node.js world, for example, people use a tool called npm
which fetches all the versions from various sources in a simple and reproducable way.

As someone working on some drupal site you often want to understand what happens on a specific site. This blog post will describe a tool which helps to understand the site faster and easier.

One example you wanna see are the executed database queries. In Drupal 7 we had the wonderful Devel module which showed a list of executed database queries below the page but there are way more information you might want to know:

Explaining the new routing system in Drupal 8 (blog series)

Body:

There has been a lot of blog posts how to use the new hook_menu/page callback equivalent in Drupal 8 (http://effulgentsia.drupalgardens.com/content/drupal-8-hello-oop-hello-… for a great reference) on that.

On the other hand these posts don't cover how the routing system actually works, so here comes a series of posts, how the routing system works in Drupal 8.

The basic part.

The really basic idea behind the symfony control flow is the following:

Drupal 8 #dreammarkup

Body:

Now once TWIG was commited to core, I‘d like to talk a bit about the unofficial dreammarkup initiative. It‘s about getting the core templates clean and down to their needs, reducing the markup and class overad to semanticly right and usable markup to start with. If you are interested in getting involved, you can check out http://drupal.org/node/1980004 or search in the issue queue for the dreammarkup tag.

Drupalcon Portland - It's all about Drupal 8

Single image:
Body:

The three conference days are over now, which means its time to draw a conclusion on DrupalCon Portland, which had been the largest DrupalCon so far with around 3,500 attendees. From a developer's point of view, the most prominent topic on the con was Drupal 8 with its code freeze only one month away. The sprints settled around the conference attracted many contributers who filled the code lounges and helped getting the job done by developing, testing or constuctive discussions. Furthermore, the community did a gread job by inviting new contributers to the "party", i.e.
