What if you could keep up with compliance and security, while at the same time increasing your service availability? The only way to pull that off would be to apply kernel fixes without interrupting your service. That’s exactly what SUSE Linux Enterprise Live Patching lets you do. Plus, the subscription gives you access to fixes for any SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 maintenance Linux kernel released in the last 12 months.
Benefits of Live PatchingSUSE Linux Enterprise Live Patching provides Linux kernel patching functionality without the need to reboot or interrupt your mission-critical workloads and in-memory databases, saving the cost of downtime and increasing service availability. When you subscribe, you get access to a dedicated update channel. Using packages from this channel you can patch the Linux kernel.
SUSE Linux Enterprise Live Patching is built on an open source technology called “kGraft,” developed by Labs. For the details of this technology, please visit here.
Yes, this is possible. The patches provided with Live Patching are stackable.
Up to one year. Live patches are provided for kernels up to one year old. For kernels older than one year no live patches will be made available.
When a security loophole in the Linux kernel is identified, patching systems are the only way to minimize your exposure to a potential malicious attack. Patching often requires stopping the system. What if you are not allowed to interrupt service? SUSE Linux Enterprise Live Patching is the answer. It allows you to apply Linux kernel patches without any downtime.
Stopping the Linux kernel is problematic for low-latency applications such as simulations and real-time applications. These applications don’t allow interruptions for even a millisecond, or they must be restarted. SUSE Linux Enterprise Live Patching doesn't stop the system during patching, ensuring that your mission-critical workloads run without downtime.
The patches in SUSE Linux Enterprise Live Patching are delivered as signed RPMs through a dedicated update channel. Introducing Live Patching into your established administrative process is simple because you can easily reuse your existing deployment methods including, but not limited to, YaST, Zypper, Subscription Management Tool (SMT), and SUSE Manager.
