    Nancy Desrosiers was featured in a CBC Go Public story yesterday, after Industrial Alliance insurance refused to honour an accident insurance policy that would have awarded a $50,000 payout. Desrosiers' daughter, Emily Laprise, lost a significant portion of vision in her left eye after a hard hit by a soccer ball detached her retina and ripped a hole in the retinal lining. Desrosiers had an accident insurance policy for her daughter, but the insurer said Emily didn't qualify because her eye injury was not sufficiently severe.

  • Father and son charged with attempted murder, kidnapping of woman near Prince George

    A father and son have been charged with the attempted murder of a 30-year-old woman on a remote forestry road east of Prince George. Fifty-three-year-old James Stanley Filiatrault and his 21-year-old son, WiIlliam Thomas Filiatrault, are charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault and attempted murder. Investigators say it appears the woman was driven down a remote forest service road approximately 50 kilometres east of Prince George on the night of Saturday, November 5.

    Nestlé Waters Canada is under fire after employees sat in the city council chambers in Guelph, Ont., hours before a special meeting on water-taking permits was set to begin Monday night. Mayor Cam Guthrie said the people arrived during another public meeting and didn't leave. "After the tenth delegation, the Nestlé employees left and the chamber was wide open for anyone to come in and join us for the remaining 20 delegations," Guthrie wrote on Twitter after he was accused of allowing the employees to take seats from citizens.

  • YouTube star pleads guilty to vandalism in false report case

    A gay YouTube personality has pleaded guilty to felony vandalism in an incident in which he claimed he was the victim of a hate crime. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office says London-native Calum McSwiggan pleaded guilty Monday and was sentenced to three years of supervised probation and 52 anger management sessions. McSwiggan was charged with vandalizing a car belonging to a man who he had an altercation with outside a West Hollywood gay club in late June, then falsely claiming he was beaten by the man and his friends.

    A British banker was convicted of murder Tuesday for killing two Indonesian women in Hong Kong, torturing one of them over three days while using cocaine in a gruesome case that shocked the Chinese financial hub. The nine-person jury returned unanimous verdicts against Rurik Jutting after a two-week trial in the High Court. The slayings in 2014 and disclosures as the case developed highlighted Hong Kong's significant inequality as well as the decadent lifestyles of some members of the former British colony's expatriate elite.

    The stories of dozens of Canadian women who claimed to have been mistreated or disrespected by medical staff during delivery came as no surprise to Winnipeg doula Julie Western. There have been 13 mistreatment complaints thus far this year in Winnipeg alone, eight of which were about staff being rude, discourteous or unhelpful, according to the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. Western, co-chair of the Manitoba Association of Child Birth and Family Education, said single, young or immigrant moms are probably more at risk of being mistreated or unable to effectively advocate for themselves.

  • Man accused of Lethbridge break-in sex assault on teen has long criminal past

    A 59-year-old Lethbridge man accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl in her bedroom has a history of sexual offences dating back to 2002. Darrel Gerard Courtoreille was arrested on Monday after someone snuck into a home early that morning and assaulted the 15-year-old girl. In 2006, police alerted the public that Courtoreille, who had previous convictions for sexual interference involving females under the age of 14, was out of custody and moving into a Lethbridge community.

Photo radar has been a controversial issue in Ottawa. Mayor Jim Watson initially opposed photo radar arguing it was a "cash grab" for the city, but later changed his stance if the technology was only used in school zones and only if the ward councillor wants it.
