I'm a stickler for the 80-characters-per-line rule when writing #rstats code, so I'm a huge fan of the margin column line that is always there as a reminder of when I should consider jumping to the next line.

The margin column line is important because Rmarkdown output in code blocks doesn’t get soft-wrapped! I keep it at 85 because the max visible line length for default PDF output is 91.

Out of interest why didn't you just write: a1 <- ggplot() + geom_bar() + geom_text() And only define a1 once?
If you're running code interactively, troubleshooting, etc., it can be easier to run a line at a time when they're each self-contained units.
TIL that I really should reacquaint myself with the options in RStudio. Turns out the vi emulation is rather usable.

This is great! My personal preference is 75, because then there is some space for prefixes, e.g. by `diff` and`git`.
I have that margin showing in my R, Python, and Fortran editors 
I do the same, however, I think that 80 characters per line is too little given that we're not in the olden days of the 2000s with 800:600 resolution anymore like cavemen so I upped it to 160 or something. (I cant remember exactly what it is, but still.)
