Based on @jakevdp's original idea, we’ve organized a total of ten hack weeks so far between @AstroHackWeek, #NeuroHackademy and #GeoHackWeek. Hack weeks have been, among other things, an opportunity for us to experiment with ideas around teaching and collaboration.
They are also designed to increase #datascience literacy among scientists, spark lasting collaborations within and across fields, and encourage researchers to make science more open and reproducible.
This paper details our philosophy behind organizing these events, our experiences and some first results from our evaluations.
For those interested in organizing a similar event themselves, we’ve also included ~12 pages of experiences, practical advice and suggestions in the supplementary materials, but we also learn new things every year, which we will continue to write about in some form.
I am unashamedly proud of this paper, partly because it took a lot of hard work + learning new things (survey statistics! effect sizes! equivalence tests!), but mainly because it was such a fantastic collaboration with @arokem , @aaarendt , @_inundata , @davidwhogg and @jakevdp
I’ve never been part of a team that worked so well together, and the discussions we've had as part of writing this paper, and around organizing hack weeks in general, have crucially shaped how I think about science and collaboration.
I also want to give a shout out to @BrittaFiore, whose ethnographic work at the first #AstroHackWeek inspired us in more ways than I can count, @staeiou and @digitalFlaneuse who helped us build the survey and @c_huebner who fielded my many questions about survey statistics.
And finally, none of our hack weeks or this collaboration would have happened without the Moore-Sloan Data Science Environment at @uwescience, @NYUDataScience and @UCBIDS, who, along with @MooreFound and @SloanFoundation, have been integral in hosting and funding our hack weeks.
That's awesome, I finally will have a ref to convince my colleagues and funding bodies that hackathons are effective!
