Fantastic review. Was sad to hear there is no plan to release details or public version. It would be amazing if I could enter a protein sequence into the google search bar and it would return a structure. If I had one wish for the Holiday season this year, that would be it :)

Agree. it's on a case-by-case basis. Mo seems to say that this DeepMind paper is a source of hope (for humanity at large, not for academia and big Pharma). That's a good complement for my own perspective, which is focused on the long list of hyped papers

In a way this is interestingly parallel to AlphaGo. Uninteresting problem that has been a backwater for decades, applying massively more Flops gets unsurprisingly better results, hype storm ensues.

Very interesting read! The technical details are over my head, but I thought it was interesting how the appearance of a “new player” impacted researchers, including the fear of obsolescence you described. Other fields face the same fears I guess. Thank you for sharing.

it reminds me the panic that briefly spread in NLP circles when Deep Learning took off 3 or 4 years ago. With some prominent figures of their field saying that NLP was a rabbit in a car terrorized by a car flashlight or something like that.
