Today marks the centenary of the Battle of Amiens, which was a decisive victory for the allied powers during the First World War. At an event at Amiens Cathedral later the Armed Forces will lead the whole country in remembering the sacrifices made 100 years ago. #Amiens100pic.twitter.com/9oo4zvduqQ

We will remember them. My grandfather fought in WW1 and afterwards taught me a few words of French as a child. He was one of the 'lucky' soldiers who returned home.

Mine too. He told of lying in a shell hole, surrounded by the dead and having had a leg blown off. I often reflect on the lost generations of those who did not return. #wewilrememberthem

If there's anymore wars, send in the Politicians first. They probably started it, or their "Leader pals" did. So don't send in the normal troops.

It was the beginning of the end. That victory was the start of the hundred days offensive which lead to the armistice.

The Ministry of Defence has long been the most Orwellian name for a government department. If we save our relationship with the EU we can continue to assure peace and stability in Europe without arms. That is the best form of defence.

One can but hope that you’ve honoured the dead by sending a soldier of rank rather than a here-today-gone-tomorrow chancer like the current Secretary of State, Private Pike.
