Challenge: Simplify internal IT infrastructure to better serve customers
As a leading telecom provider, Swisscom’s survival depends on quickly delivering new applications to its customers. But its existing IT infrastructure used multiple platforms, which limited the company’s ability to expand its business and compete globally. Swisscom wanted to use open source solutions to simplify its internal cloud environment and enable quick, efficient app development to meet customer demand. “Swisscom is committed to guiding our customers into the digital age,” said Stephan Massalt, vice president of Cloud at Swisscom.

Swisscom builds OpenStack cloud possibilities with Red Hat
Solution: Build a flexible, scalable cloud solution
Swisscom turned to Red Hat to simplify its cloud environment into 1 platform using an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) solution. In addition, Swisscom used virtual management tools to make it easier to add or integrate new components.
The open nature of Red Hat’s solution gives Swisscom the flexibility to add technology from new partners as business needs evolve. “Being a partner for us really means that you’re engaged in the way we build our solutions, how we offer them to our customers, and how we develop them in the future,” said Massalt. “Red Hat is a pivotal partner in this mission.”

Results: Deliver better customer service with a streamlined cloud solution
The simplified cloud environment brought speed, agility, and flexibility to Swisscom’s internal IT infrastructure. It also opened up new lines of revenue with quicker app development and secure offerings. For example, Swisscom recently launched MyCloud, a Dropbox-style app for residential customers that offers unlimited cloud storage. “We’ve given every Swiss citizen a piece of the cloud,” said Marco Hochstrasser, head of Cloud Platform Development at Swisscom.
