Former Prime Minister Tony Blair could return to a frontline role in British politics to try to prevent Theresa May's Conservative Party from destroying the country with a so-called "hard Brexit", he said in an interview. The only Labour prime minister to win three general elections, Blair was hugely popular during the start of his 10 years in power but his support for the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq severely tarnished his reputation. In an interview with Esquire Magazine, Blair said it was a "tragedy" that Britons were left with a choice between a Conservative Party intent on a hard Brexit and a Labour Party that he described as "ultra-left" and stuck in the 1960s.

French President Francois Hollande has insisted the EU must take a firm line with the UK after Theresa May signalled she backed a so-called "hard Brexit". Mr Hollande said Britain wanted to leave the bloc "but doesn't want to pay", which he argued was "not possible". Mr Hollande's stance reflects that of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has stressed the UK cannot have full access to the single market if it limits EU immigration.

By Guy Faulconbridge LONDON (Reuters) - For Prime Minister Theresa May, Britain's vote to leave the European Union is a demand for the biggest change in at least a generation in the way the United Kingdom is run. Russia's Defence Ministry said on Thursday the United States should carefully consider the consequences of strikes on Syrian army positions because such strikes would obviously threaten Russian servicemen. Commenting on Russia's S-300 air defence complexes recently deployed to Syria, the ministry said in a statement that their crews would hardly have time to detect the exact flight paths of missiles or from what direction they were launched. The ministry also mentioned a more sophisticated air defence system, the S-400, which safeguards Russia's Hmeymim air base in Syria.
