Around the world with Google Developer Day 2011
Monday, December 5, 2011
By Monica Tran, Google Developer Day Team
This year's Google Developer Day events just finished after a worldwide tour across nine cities and four continents. We'd like to thank the thousands of developers who contributed to making Google Developer Day a success. If we didn’t make it to your city, you can continue to get regular updates on all things developer at our
Google Developers
page on Google+. And for those of you looking for a community to join, get in touch with one of our local
Google Technology User Groups
(GTUGs) or if you’re feeling bold,
start your own chapter
!
Please read the recaps below, and visit our
website
to get the highlights, videos and photos from Google Developer Day 2011. See you in 2012!
Sao Paulo, Brazil:
The
countdown
to Google Developer Day ended with the first of our events in Sao Paulo, where we welcomed over 1,600 developers. Brazilian developers showed up in full force for the event, celebrating the latest
Chrome Webstore
launch, showing us the most crazy
code
they’ve ever written and interacting with developers’ creations in the
Android ADK
showcase.
Buenos Aires, Argentina:
Continuing our Latin America tour, James Whittaker, Director of Engineering, delivered a
keynote
featuring the latest from Android, Chrome, and Google+. The keynote
presentations
were built in HTML5 and featured a 3D demo of the latest
Ice Age
trailer. The Google+ game was a hit among attendees, who used the pin exchange as a conversation starter to meet other developers. Those who found all five, including the elusive black Circles pin, took home one of
these guys
.
Moscow, Russia:
Russia is home to the 4th largest developer population in the world, accounting for 12% of EMEA’s developers. On October 10, more than 1,800 of those
developers
joined us in Moscow, where we hosted five simultaneous tracks featuring 19 speakers and 25 sessions. With the help of Russian
GTUGs
, we featured 16 projects, including
ADK-powered robots
from our Open Call challenges. Check out photos of our speakers in
Russian national shirts
and other photos of the event
here
.
Prague, Czech Republic:
This year’s Google Developer Day focused on bringing nearly 1,000 members of the developer community together in creative and fun ways. Our very first Developer Sandbox featured 12 companies, in addition to four projects from ADK Challenge and a showcase of the 20 latest Android devices. At the end of the day--after 27 sessions by 25 speakers--Ignite stole the show with eight Czech influencers presenting on topics from happiness at work to 3D printing. Additionally, check out our HTML5 developer competition,
Mam Padla
, as well as
videos
and
photos
from the event.
Beijing, China:
Despite being a late addition, China showed up in a big way with a 3-city Google Developer Day tour that attracted 2,240 attendees. In addition to the
keynote
, 36
breakout sessions
, 21
partner booths
and 6
product demos
were offered, and over 60 developer applications
showcased
. New to Beijing this year was the live audience
instant message display
, which was shown during the keynote. Seven
GTUGs
across China sent in greeting videos and nearly a dozen developers came on stage to
share their experiences
developing innovative business solutions using Google technologies.
Tokyo, Japan:
With over 1,700 developers in attendance after being selected via DevQuiz from 5,000 registrations, and with over 100 volunteer developers and Googlers collaborating to organize, this year’s Google Developer Day embraced the spirit of open source with 40 developers in the
Developer Sandbox
, 17
Open Call
(Android and HTML5) exhibits, a
Mini Theater
for developers to stage informal presentations, and an appearance from
Bar Android
.
Ignite
closed the event with lightning talks from 6 developers and our DevQuiz team, GoogleFes!, and a special dance performance from the
GDD48
. Check out our
highlights video
and
photos
for the full picture.
Sydney, Australia:
We hosted our largest developer audience in Australia at our third Google Developer Day event. Our Sydney-based engineers and Developer Relations speakers put on 32 sessions, including a
VC panel
that featured interviews from experts at Posse, Pollenizer and Atlassian. To quench their thirst, developers turned to
iZac
, our Android ADK-powered bartender. For more highlights and photos, visit our
homepage
.
Tel Aviv, Israel:
Israel has one of the highest numbers of startups per capita, leading us to deem it the “
Startup Nation
” amongst our Google Developer Day countries. 1,450 developers joined us for this year’s event, where we hosted 27 sessions, as well as lots of fun activities at the
innovation lounge
. To showcase the rich innovation coming from the country, local developers
Paradroid
,
The Sign Language Glove
,
Xtendi
and
iOnRoad
(among many others) were on-hand to demo their creations; while Tmura (the Israeli Public Service Venture Fund) and the
Israeli Accessibility Association
helped raise awareness for causes relevant to developers. Check out the highlights
video
and
photos
.
Berlin, Germany:
With over 2,100 developers in attendance at this year’s event, the grande finale of our world tour,
Google Developer Day in Berlin
, was also our largest single GDD in 2011. Partnering with two of the most innovative universities in Germany,
Technische Universität Berlin
(TU) and
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
(HU), we hosted 37 sessions in 5 parallel tracks. We had a great presentation of the winners of the German
ADK- and HTML5-Open Call
, university students showcased 31
projects with innovative technologies
mostly related to Google products and GDD themes, and we had a great after-GDD get together at the famous Berlin underground space station
c-base
. Our German GTUG community, with 16 local GTUGs the most active in Europe, organized an amazing 4-day
Developer Weekend
, which included Bootcamp, Hack-and-Tell and Ignite sessions. Don’t miss our
highlights video
(featuring beatboxing at its best) and our
photo gallery
.

Open Call results: doodle your way to GDD
Friday, August 19, 2011
By Phoebe Peronto, Developer Marketing Team
On Tuesday, August 2, the Open Call HTML5 Challenge for Google Developer Day 2011 kicked off. With 2 weeks time to turn around a submission, participants were asked to design and implement an original HTML5 doodle of the Google Developer day Dymaxion map, adding their own local twist. Doodles had to be built using open web technologies (HTML5, WebGL, etc.) and feature a theme locally relevant to the participant’s GDD host country.
We received submissions from eight countries around the world, which were then reviewed by panels of local HTML5 experts. Overall, the judges were blown away by the creativity and innovation of the submissions. Top entries were selected from each country based on technical execution, creativity, and cultural theming. See below for the judges’ top picks, with descriptions in the creators' own words. Some of the comments are in the creator's native language; for translations, use
Google Translate
. To see a submission in action, click its thumbnail image.

Just used html5 canvas to do very simple game functionality and transitions. The Dymaxion map turns into an Argentinian flag when the player takes the sun into the map centre.
Creator
: Carlos Olivera
How did you do it?
I had to made a simple polygonal animation with background music, so, I've used Raphael 1.5.2 - JavaScript Vector Library for loading and display figures (SVG), and I've used jQuery with Runloop plugin for looping animation; the result is an HTML5 based animation with so few lines of code. The background music is possible with HTML5 <audio> element.
Australia
Creator
: Peter Finch
How did you do it?
The doodle is created using a HTML5 2D canvas element. The Dymaxion map is programmatically generated by subdividing the triangles in the original map into smaller sub-triangles and then drawing all of them in different colours based on a colour map representing the image to be drawn. The colour maps were generated using a Java program that mapped the relative location of the triangle onto a target image and then back onto the page colour map. The waves then merge the images, one on top of another, to create the transition effect.
Creator
: Brian McKenna
How did you do it?
I imported the Dymaxion map to Blender and then animated it to transform into the Opera House using "shape keys". The Dymaxion map, Opera House, Southern Cross and stars all rendered using Three.js. Everything else rendered with normal HTML5/CSS3.
Creator
: Marko Vuksanovic
How did you do it?
Doodle is a manipulation of the Dymaxion map using HTML canvas element. Interactivity is achieved using native drag and drop events and transitions. Animations are used to transition between the iconic landmarks of Sydney.

Minha ideia foi criar um jogo da memória com as cartas contendo os principais topicos do Google Developer Day 2011. No jogo foi utilizado tecnologias como HTML5, CSS3 e JAVASCRIPT.
Creator
: Rogério Celestino Santos
How did you do it?

Creator
: Miguel Antonio Silva
How did you do it?
3D objects and animations were created using the program Blender. The movement of the pencils was detected and painted in a 2D canvas html5. The canvas was used as texture for the 3D objects. For the 3D, the library used was Three.js, and for the animations tween.js.

How did you do it?
Split SVG Dymaxion map template into small png pieces; position PNG pieces with CSS3 into HTML5 Dymaxion map; read wiki about Icosahedron; reverse engineer positioning of Icosahedron faces in space with Google SketchUp; build 3d icosahedron model with CSS3; Web Audio API Loading Sound via XHR in arraybuffer to play it via the Web Audio API and visualise it on the DymaxionMap (zIndex of elements); canvas mapping; triangle human pictures, using canvas clip(); using of the ecma5 script (forEach and much more); triangle videos by applying SVG mask; Germanizing of the nyan cat by rainbow replacing with German flag; nice fonts with Google Web Fonts.
Creator
: Josep del Rio Herrera
How did you do it?
The GDD's Dymaxion map is a icosahedron, and each of the little triangles is the location of a GDD event; the doodle uses that icosahedron as the second "o" for a Google doodle. Clicking on it will show the GDD logo and information for the Berlin event. It uses a WebGL canvas to render the icosahedron and the Dymaxion map, and overlays text over it using SVG and CSS3 animations.

Googlespiel is an interactive HTML glockenspiel. It was built using inline SVG, HTML audio and jQuery. It can be played either by clicking on the 'keys' with the mouse or by using the keyboard. When Googlespiel loads it play Fur Elise by Beethoven. The key sounds were created using Apple Logic Studio music software.

The title of this doodle is "Thank you the World from JAPAN". This doodle expresses our gratitude to the people in the world for their hearty support for Japan at the last disaster, with the Japanese traditional style of manner of "OJIGI". It's also showing ""Thank you"" tweets all over the world at the location of the Dymaxion map in the background.
Creator
: Aiham Hammami
How did you do it?
I have been previously creating an object oriented 2d canvas animation library so I used that to create a puzzle game in the shape of the Dymaxion map. It implements MVC design to separate concerns (UI and logic) so it makes the code easy to follow (i hope). I cut up all the photos into triangles manually, then I had to pinpoint exactly where on the rectangular image the triangle vertices were, so I could create accurate mouse overs. Enjoy.

Russia
Creator
: Valentyn Shybanov
How did you do it?
All animations are done using CSS3 transitions - mostly no Javascript is used for it. Triangles are drawn using '-webkit-mask-image': -webkit-canvas()' trick (canvas as mask). Currently only Google Chrome supports CSS3 'mask-image' so doodle can be watched only on it. Simple quiet music is pre-generated and played by HTML5 Audio.
Creator
: Anton Eprev
How did you do it?
The idea is to show the Dymaxion map so that it would be like on ignition of a fluorescent lamp. The host country area and text letters continue to flicker after turning on. Requires browsers that support inline SVG.
Creator
: Roman Fedorov
How did you do it?
I really love this game and I really love Chrome and HTML5. I've made this doodle with great pleasure!
Creator
: Mikhail Kalinin
How did you do it?
This is the Memorize game. I used jQuery library with plugins. For best compatibility with all modern browsers, I used CSS3 2D transform instead of 3D transform.
Creator
: Alexey Belozerov
How did you do it?
I have used 2 HTML5 canvas objects as layers and performed 'destination-over' composition mode to make erasing effect.

It's coming: Open Call for Google Developer Day
Monday, July 11, 2011
By Phoebe Peronto, Developer Marketing Team
Registration for our first set of
Google Developer Day
(GDD) events in Latin America will begin in two weeks, with the remaining six events following shortly thereafter. As in years past, the application process requires each developer to complete a short questionnaire and optional Developer Quiz.
Numbers and statistics aside, we wanted to give you a way to really show us what you’re made of. So for 2011, we’re inviting our most passionate developers to participate in
Open Call for Google Developer Day
, for a chance to showcase your work alongside your peers from eight GDD countries around the world.
This year’s Open Call challenges will focus on the
Android ADK
and
HTML5
platforms, while giving you a chance to show us why your GDD country rocks. No matter which challenge you choose, your submission must reflect the regional culture of the GDD that you will be attending, be this through music, creative imagery, lighting or colors--the opportunities are endless!
A panel of judges in each country will
select 10 submissions
from each of the challenges to be featured online and in-person at Google Developer Day. We will also take your submission into consideration when reviewing your GDD application. Remember that Open Call is an optional supplement to your GDD application, though you might get extra credit for participating. In many cases, this will also mean that you secure your spot at GDD before we open registration to the public.
The Android ADK Open Call will open
on July 18
with the HTML5 Open Call following on
August 1
. In the meantime, start by brushing up on your skills and familiarizing yourself with the guidelines for Open Call at our nifty
website
.
Want more GDD news? Check back on this blog and stay tuned as we work on updating our
GDD website
to bring you the latest on locations, sessions and agenda. We're looking forward to seeing you at
