Good managers are crucially important for newsroom data and research teams where so much of our work is invisible and misunderstood. It is thought of as support work, and usually doesn't even come with bylines.

Even small things like building a community with a team slack channel, which became a refuge for us all. We would trade research and data tips there, discuss terrible news, offer support to our colleagues, celebrate their successes and birthdays.

I wanted to write about about how critical good managers can be for a newsroom, especially for folks that work under the banner of data and research.
The best example of that that I've seen in my career is @LynnDombek, our former research director at The Intercept.
