This meetup has been officially approved for Continuing Accessibility Education Credits for maintaining Website Accessibility Specialist (WAS) and Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC) certification through the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP).

About Us & Our Events
We're a global group of WordPress developers, designers, and users interested in building more accessible websites. Join us twice per month for meetups on a variety of topics related to making WordPress websites that can be used by people of all abilities.

Meetups are held on the first Thursday of the month at 8 AM U.S. pacific time and on the third Monday of the month at 5 PM U.S. pacific time. All groups are held virtually via Zoom so you can join from anywhere. All meetups are live captioned and some have ASL interpretation. We encourage speakers to verbally describe imagery for people who cannot see the presentation.

Audio Description: If Your Eyes Could Speak: Joel Snyder

This presentation will demonstrate how audio description (AD) provides access to visual images of the arts, websites, and much more for people who are blind or have low vision. Using words that are succinct, vivid, and imaginative, describers observe, select, and then succinctly and vividly use language to convey the visual image that is not fully accessible to a segment of the population—the American Foundation for the Blind notes that 31 million Americans are blind or “have difficulty seeing even with correction.”

Anatomy of an Accessible Nav: Steve Jones

Link visible for attendees

Navigation is the main component of a website when it comes to moving around different pages and finding content. For this reason, it is critical to design and develop an accessible navigation. This means keeping in mind those using different devices and assistive technologies such as screen readers.

An accessible navigation is easy to understand, semantic, and adaptive. In this session, Steve will go over the best practices to design and develop an accessible navigation from start to finish. He'll also discuss how to replace the navigation in an existing theme.

The need to make websites accessible to people with disabilities is increasingly gaining attention among business owners and developers. Website accessibility doesn't just come into play for new website builds; frequently, it makes more sense to remediate existing websites over time. Adding website accessibility monitoring and remediation to your offerings can increase recurring revenue and attract higher-budget clients. This talk will present a model for recurring web accessibility service plans and how to deliver them - even if you're not a website accessibility expert.

About the Speaker:
Amber is the Founder & CEO at Equalize Digital, a website accessibility consulting/accessible website development firm. She is working to build a more equitable web for people of all abilities. Amber is also the organizer of the WordPress Accessibility Meetup and WordPress Accessibility Day conference.
