MAKERS is a women's leadership platform that highlights the stories of groundbreaking women today to create the leaders of tomorrow. It is the largest collection of women's stories ever assembled. MAKERS encompasses broadcast documentaries, web and mobile-first video content, and live events.
MAKERS launched in 2012 and features over 3,000 videos and the stories of more than 300 women. In 2013, MAKERS premiered the 3-hour documentary MAKERS: Women Who Make America, on PBS telling the story of the modern American women's movement for the first time on television. In 2014, MAKERS premiered the Emmy-nominated MAKERS documentary series on PBS highlighting the stories of women in 6 spheres of influence — space, comedy, Hollywood, business, war, and politics. That same year, MAKERS went global with the launch of MAKERS China in partnership with Yang Lan. In 2015, the team launched MAKERS Canada and this year will launch MAKERS UK. MAKERS continues to share the stories of trailblazing women through its MAKERS Minute series. MAKERS executive produced the song "This Is For My Girls." Inspired by the mission of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let Girls Learn initiative, "This Is For My Girls,” is written by Diane Warren and features vocal performances from Kelly Clarkson, Missy Elliott, Zendaya, Janelle Monae, Kelly Rowland, Chloe x Halle, and Lea Michele. The song hit No. 1 on Billboard.
MAKERS launched the MAKERS Stories app in March 2016. Designed to empower individuals to be their own storyteller, MAKERS Stories allows users to record their stories or the stories of others, creating their own MAKERS videos that live alongside a collection including Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Gloria Steinem, Martha Stewart, Ava DuVernay, and Lena Dunham.
Current MAKERS include former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, media mogul & philanthropist Oprah Winfrey, writer, actor, producer Lena Dunham, comedian Ellen DeGeneres, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, network news pioneer Katie Couric, Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, actor and producer Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, writer and producer Shonda Rhimes, former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, television journalist Connie Chung, the first African-American woman in space Mae Jemison, the first women to enter the Boston Marathon Katherine Switzer, Little League's first girl Maria Pepe, the founder of Latina Magazine Christy Haubegger, and more.
