CANCER AND TOBACCO CARCINOGENS
WSU researcher receives $2.6M to study tobacco carcinogens
A Washington State University Spokane researcher has received a $2.6 million federal grant to study the body’s ability to keep tobacco smoke components from causing cancer.

Philip Lazarus, a distinguished professor and chair of pharmaceutical sciences, will look for genetic markers in enzymes that indicate an increased risk of developing lung, head and neck cancers from exposure to the carcinogens commonly found in tobacco smoke.

UGT proteins are a major family of enzymes in the body that detoxify and eliminate carcinogens. They bind sugar molecules to carcinogenic targets, like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from tobacco smoke, to make them more water soluble and easier for the body to excrete.

“The liver is the main filter of the body, but localized metabolic detoxification and elimination also occurs in tissues outside the liver,” said Lazarus. “For lung and head and neck tissue, this may be an important mechanism for reducing internal carcinogen exposure.”

In earlier work, Lazarus found genetic variants of certain UGT enzymes that reduced the body’s ability to detoxify carcinogens, increasing the risk of cancer. The new study will focus on similar UGT enzymes recently identified as important in carcinogen detoxification.

The research team will also look at different forms of UGT proteins expressed by the UGT gene produced by a process called “alternative splicing.” These UGT forms may not work as enzymes and even appear to knock out the detoxifying activity of normal UGT proteins.

The UGT enzymes play a major role in drug response and metabolism, so a better understanding of the detoxification pathway will help researchers develop personalized approaches to medicine and the treatment of disease.

“This could be important in how genes are regulated, which means it could be a ‘new horizon’ for science as it relates to how we understand susceptibility to cancer,” said Lazarus. “My research examines why some people get cancer and some don’t, and how we can use differences in individual susceptibility to develop personalized treatments.”

Lazarus and Anna Vergara, a WSU pharmaceutical sciences graduate student, are working with the research labs of Dave Christiani, a professor at Harvard Medical School who studies lung cancer, and Qingyi Wei, a professor at Duke University who studies head and neck cancer. Both collaborators are experts in molecular epidemiology - the study of molecular markers and their role in disease.

The five-year grant is from the National Institutes of Environmental and Health Sciences, a division of the National Institutes of Health.

FARMING ON MARS - THE PLANNING BEGINS
Scientists at Washington State University and the University of Idaho are helping students figure out how to farm on Mars, much like astronaut Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon, attempts in the critically acclaimed movie “The Martian.”

WSU physicist Michael Allen and UI food scientist Helen Joyner teamed up to explore the challenge. Their five-page study guide was published online at the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science the day the movie premiered earlier this month, said Allen.

“Congratulations! You are leaving Earth forever,” the case study begins. “You are selected to be part of a mining colony of 100 people located on the planet Mars. Before you head to Mars, however, you need to figure out how to feed yourself and your colleagues once you are there.”

The task is similar to that of Watney, who must grow food in an artificial habitat after he is separated from his mission crew in a Martian windstorm: “Mars will come to fear my botany powers,” he boasts.

The film has been praised for its scientific accuracy, with the exception of the storm’s unlikely intensity. The movie led the box office for the first two weekends of the month and has grossed more than $143 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

No consensus yet on ‘optimal foods’
Allen and Joyner have students identify potential challenges to producing crops indefinitely and develop criteria for selecting crops. Students then use a scoring system to select three optimal foods.
In some 30 trial runs with students and teachers, “no two people have ever gotten the same answer,” said Allen, a senior instructor of physics and astronomy and director of the WSU Planetarium.

One particular challenge is that scientists have little idea of what Martian soil is actually like, he said. Probes have detected little carbon, the central element to life as we know it, or nitrogen, which is needed to make protein. Water is also likely to react with peroxides in the soil, bubbling off as gas.

Like real astronauts, the tabletop astronauts are limited in what they can bring, so they won’t have a lot of tools to farm with.

“You are starting with nothing,” said Joyner, an assistant professor in the School of Food Science, which is jointly administered by WSU and UI.

Learning to live with limited choices
Would-be Martians must also wrestle with the mental challenge of some very limited fare.

“If I had to eat a single food for the rest of my life, could I do it?” Joyner asked.

But in a sense, farming and dining on the Red Planet is beside the point, Allen said.

“I’m not teaching about growing food on Mars,” he said. “I’m teaching about living with choices. I’m teaching about problem solving.”

The case study is one of more than 500 at the National Science Foundation-funded center, which is operated by the University at Buffalo. All cases undergo a rigorous process of peer review by outside reviewers and author revision.

“Farming In Space? Developing a Sustainable Food Supply on Mars” can be found at http://sciencecases.lib.buffalo.edu/cs/collection/detail.asp?case_id=800&id=800. The teaching notes and the answer key are password protected and require a paid subscription to access.

Catalyst Efficiency Improved, Platinum Needs Reduced - WSU Research
Researchers have developed a way to use less platinum in chemical reactions commonly used in the clean energy, green chemicals and automotive industries, according to a paper published this week in Science.

Led by the University of New Mexico in collaboration with Washington State University, the research team developed a unique approach for trapping platinum atoms that improves the efficiency and stability of reactions. Find the abstract of the paper at Science Magazine, http://science.sciencemag.org/cgi/doi/10.1126/science.aaf8800.

Delivering the perfect steak depends on genes and hair - WSU research
A 10-year breeding project to build the perfect beefsteak has found that tenderness is in the genes – it is an inherited quality.

“American beef is a wonderful product, but its tenderness can be improved,” said Frank Hendrix, a Washington State University Extension educator and animal scientist who teamed with fellow researchers in the WSU Department of Animal Sciences (https://ansci.wsu.edu/) to select and breed cattle for tenderness.

WATER-SPLITTING Discovery Advances Renewable Energy Potential
Washington State University researchers have found a way to more efficiently create hydrogen from water – an important key in making renewable energy production and storage viable.

The researchers, led by professors Yuehe Lin and Scott Beckman in the WSU School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, have developed a catalyst from low-cost materials. It performs as well as or better than catalysts made from precious metals that are used for the process.

The work is published in the journal Advanced Energy Materials. See story at WSU News at https://news.wsu.edu/2016/10/25/better-water-split
