Nanomaterials for longevity of solar cells http://gplus.ly/1RXuuKc #science
Graphene is one million times thinner than paper; so thin that it is actually considered two dimensional. Carbon is an incredibly versatile element. Depending on how atoms are arranged, it can produce hard diamonds or soft graphite

Although graphene is a great conductor, it is not as great for collecting the power produced by the a solar cell. But researchers have been making a lot of progress to modify the compound by experimenting with the derivatives of graphene and also with modifications like graphene oxide, which is less conductive than graphene but more conductive than conventional materials. They are also better charge collectors.

+Richard Maxon (flies into murderous rage) THAT'S NOT OKAY!!! Lol sorry, that crap effects me for some reason.... when I'm not in a murderous rage, I know it's dumb, but for some reason I can't cope. Oral sex is a no-no, eating at restaurants, movie theaters... crap, I need a shrink lol

#Science Perhaps a vaccine won't be all to difficult for Zika after all, it would be good news if that's the case.
A single dose of an experimental vaccine can protect mice against the Zika virus, raising renewed hope of a vaccine for humans, say scientists

well now expose those mice to the insecticides that they are spraying in south America, then tell me how the mice are doing.

What are artificial neural networks (ANNs)? #AI   #technology   #science
At a theoretical level, the concept of artificial intelligence has fueled and sharpened the philosophical debates on the nature of the mind, intelligence, and the uniqueness of human beings. Insights from the field have proved invaluable to biologists, psychologists, and linguists in helping to understand the processes of memory, learning, and language.

Back in March, scientists from the Netherlands’ Wageningen University successfully grew ten different crops in Mars-like soil provided by NASA.

But there was a catch: they couldn’t eat the food. They worried it contained heavy metals like cadmium and lead, which were present in the Mars soil stimulant.

Well, good news: further research determined at least four of the crops do not contain dangerous heavy metal levels and are therefore edible, getting us one step closer to life on the Red Planet.

Melting Styrofoam with Acetone

Acetone is a colorless organic solvent commonly found in nail polish remover and paint thinner. Over 6.7 million tonnes of acetone were produced in 2010, mainly for use in chemical production and manufacturing.

Styrofoam is a trademarked brand name for extruded polystyrene foam used primarily for thermal insulation. The name is also frequently used incorrectly to refer to the expanded polystyrene foam found in disposable cups, coolers, or cushioning materials for packaging. Polystyrene is one of the most widely used plastics and is extremely soluble in organic solvents.

When exposed to acetone, the cross-linkers between the polystyrene molecules are broken, causing the material to dissolve. Because the molecules in the expanded polystyrene foam were very far apart (hence the low weight of the cup), the dissolved material takes up much less space.

Slow Motion Explosion

Destin over on the SmarterEveryDay +YouTube channel created a transparent potato cannon for the purpose of visualizing the explosion taking place within the tube. He moved the ignition to the center of the transparent window so the combustion was more easily observed.

The resulting slow motion video captured at 20,000 frames-per-second reveals the expanding fireball within the tube. As the aerosol propellent combusts, it causes a rapid increase in pressure that eventually forces the potato out of the barrel.
