STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI REVIEW

First of all, I'm just going to start off with saying that the movie was beautiful. The cinematography in it was absolutely stunning. At times it felt like you were there with them. I don't know about you, but at some points it just left me breathless. First, I'll start off with things I didn't like about the movie or things that bugged me, then I'll go to things I did like instead of trying to do a play-by-play of the whole movie. Now, let's begin! Oh and, spoilers...obviously...

Leia getting blasted out of the cockpit of the ship...only to force float her way back inside to safety...Probably the worst part of the movie for me. It was so lame, and cheesy. I mean, yes, it was epic to see her use her powers for the first time, it sent a little shiver up my spine, but it was used in the worst way possible. How could she have survived and FLOWN her way back to the ship with literally hardly any damage to herself except for the fact she was in a coma for like...20 minutes of the movie? And she had absolutely no cold burns, no scratches from flying debris or anything? And Luke brought her back out of it? And no one even thought to ask how on Earth she was able to do it? Ehhhhh, I hate weird, random plot holes/scenes that make no sense at all. To me, it just seemed like a weird afterthought. Like, oh hey everyone else has a cool force scene in the movie, might as well let Leia have something too. I would've loved to have seen her use the force for the first time, just under more believable circumstances.

Come on, Luke, it's time to come out of the broody stage, you're acting just like your nephew. Yes, I thought it was incredibly realistic, him not wanting anything to do with Jedi's anymore, it's completely understandable. BUT, I think it lasted WAY too long for him to come to his senses. Literally most of the movie was half set on Ahch-To when it would've been more interesting to see him get slapped back to reality sooner and have him teach Rey a hell of a lot more than he did. He was kinda useless in that department...I just felt that there was at least twenty minutes or so that could've been cut from it and no one would've been the wiser. Did Luke seem like Luke in this movie? Not really, but people have to keep in mind the trauma he went through. Something on that scale changes a person and if they have no one, it can lead them down an incredibly dark path. So no, it wasn't the Luke we all knew and loved, but it was a different Luke. A very complex Luke. And even though I would've enjoyed seeing our old Luke back, I think he died a long time ago and this is who was left behind. And he wasn't as bad as the critics and fans led me on to believe.

Admiral Holdo. Let's be honest here, her character was absolutely useless. Useless! She served no purpose through the movie except to let Leia live for another movie, and even that won't happen now. The ending should've been changed after Carrie Fisher passed away. Have Leia die a heroes death. It would've been so much more meaningful and heartbreaking if instead of that horrible scene in the beginning with her force tractor beam, she went out sacrificing herself for her people. A very noble ending to our Princess instead of this empty, meaningless one. I never liked her from the beginning. I thought she was a jerk to Poe. She could've put him in the loop on what was going on. Instead she kept it to herself. It was very noble of her to stay behind so the others could live, but it was empty. You felt no connection to the character except "oh that's too bad". It was hard to really feel any emotion to it besides that. She was literally just a fill in so they would've have to kill both Luke and Leia in the same movie.

Snoke is...dead? Another horrible and meaningless death! Why? Just answer me that, why? How is Kylo, who's still extremely immature, lead a whole galaxy? How can he lead the First Order? Hux would've been a better choice! My mind is still whirling about that. My brother, who doesn't get shocked by movies often, was speechless. It was one of his least favourite parts about the movie, and I have to agree. It was almost like they didn't quite know what to do with him and they wanted to give Kylo more to do so they just exterminated him in the worst way possible. There wasn't even an epic battle! How could Snoke see all of this, everything, and be so powerful that he couldn't see Kylo turning and killing him? A terrible, terrible plot point.

Phasma is dead too?! Why is everyone dying in this movie?! Sure, she never really DID anything, but I was still holding out hope she'd get a really epic scene against Finn. And what we got, wasn't really that epic. It was about 2 minutes in length and she burned to a crisp...Really? That's how she goes out? I would've liked to have seen Finn stick it to her with that spear of hers or something. Unfortunately, she was a useless character from start to finish. I also didn't think Del Toro's character was needed. He was another disappointment.

Rose. Now, I can't say that I didn't like. I liked her a lot, way more than I thought I would, but was the character really necessary? Maybe not. There wasn't really a whole lot she brought to the movie except a strong sense of right and wrong and morals, which was nice to see. I'm glad the movie didn't center around the same people it did in the last movie. But I still can't help feeling indifferent about the character. Same with Maz. I thought she was useless in this movie. They could've cut her out of it and no one would've been the wiser and no one really would've missed her. Sure there has to be in between characters, but they could've gotten the information via the data banks or something along those lines.

Overall, I felt as if there were a lot of battles, a lot of running and flying around that lead to nowhere. There wasn't, to me, the same spark as from The Force Awakens, but that's not to say at all that I disliked the film. Let's focus on the good points, shall we?

Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, and Adam Driver really stole the show. They're acting in this movie really out shown everyone else, especially Mark. The feelings he could bring to his eyes were incredible. It was a real treat to watch. I know how much Mark dislikes the movie, but I think he did a brilliant job with what was given to him. I think if he wasn't happy with it, me as the director, I'd let him have a say in what we did. I'd have had him put his input into it from the very beginning. Luke is his baby, he knows how he would react in any situation more than any script writer, director, or fan. It would've been only right to have him a part of the creative process. Daisy and Adam also did fantastic jobs. You could really see how torn Kylo was about things and seeing that he couldn't kill Leia speaks volumes. It proves there's still good in him.

Luke and Rey's first lesson. By far the funniest part of the movie. I loved everything about that scene.

The flashbacks. I don't know what they did to Mark, if anything, but he looked totally different here. He had such a look about it, it was just...wow. Those scenes from the flashbacks really blew my mind. They were stunning. The emotion Mark displayed was such a treat to watch. I think it's probably his finest bit of onscreen acting.

Breaking up Rey and Ben's secret meeting. Again, another visually stunning bit. Mark again stepped up and delivered some amazing acting in just those few minutes of the force break and the sword fight. Breathtaking scenes to me.

Rey telling Kylo to put some clothes on was just great as well. Definitely something I'd tell him to do. His body looked...oddly proportioned. Like it was CGI'd on...

The fight scene in Snoke's lair. I thought that was amazing to watch. It brought back reminiscence of Anakin and Obi fighting. You can tell they trained long and hard to make it just right.

Chewbacca and the Falcon. How could they not be on the Best Of list?

Leia. Even though that beginning sequence was hard to overlook, Carrie Fisher did a great job this movie. I loved seeing her with so much to do in it. She wasn't just an afterthought like she was in The Force Awakens. She actually had a purpose. And it was fun to see her real life daughter have a larger role in the movie as well. I thought she did a great job as well.

Master Yoda. How cool was it to see Yoda again? Especially trolling Luke knowing full well Rey had the old texts hidden away on the Falcon and hitting him with his cane? A really brilliant moment. At one point I even thought we'd see a force ghost of Vader, but maybe that'll be next movie? I'm joking, guys...but then again it WOULD be kind of cool...

Now, these next two aren't something that I had a strong disliking for like the rest of the points above, it was just something I was a little disappointed in. Luke and Kylo's fight scene. Before you say anything, I really did love it. I thought there was something amazing, something brilliant in how subtle it was. I loved seeing Luke out there. I just wish it would've been for real. That it would've lasted longer. I know Mark is a lot older than Adam, but it still would've been amazing to see them fight, even for a few more minutes. But I do love how Luke stuck it in Kylo at the end. One that way to say "no, you didn't win" to Kylo and that, I think, shook Kylo to the core much more than if it had been a real fight scene and Kylo really did kill him. Like I said, it was brilliant in it's own way. It left you wanting more, but at the same time, it felt rewarding. It was really the only moment in the movie that made me want to yell out loud and cheer for Luke...and scream and fangirl... It was an amazing moment in it's own way. I can't really describe it, it was just epic in it's own way. It wasn't anything spectacular, it was short, but I think it spoke volumes.

Luke's death. Again, it wasn't something that I hated, it was just something I feel impartial about. I would've loved to have seen Luke in the next movie to really have it out with Kylo, I hated to see him dye. But in a way, I didn't angry about it. Like Rey said, it was very peaceful. I think it's what Luke would've wanted. To go out quietly. It would've been heartbreaking to have Kylo kill him after a bitter battle. I would've cried my eyes out for sure. But after all that Luke had been through, after all he'd seen and had to live with, I think it was a fitting end to just fade away quietly. When you think about it, that's really the same way Yoda went out; he just went to sleep. I think Luke was ready, though I would've liked to have seen Rey come back for him, take him off that island, and have him lead the Resistance after Leia was gone. It really would've rallied the troupes, but I just can't hate the scene. It was fitting and I'm rather contented. I would've hated to have him die in front of Rey. She's really lost so much, including Han. Having Luke die in front of her could've sent her over the edge.

There's still a few mysteries that need solving like who is the little boy at the end of the movie? I would've thought he'd be far too young to be anyone from Luke's training days, but then again, Kylo doesn't look any older now than he did in the flashback so...could he be a padawan from Luke's school, or is he connected to someone else? And who are Rey's parents? I refuse to believe they're just random people who sold her off for money. We clearly saw Luke, or a ship modeled after Luke's ship in the extended lore, fly away from her in TFA. So could she be his daughter he never thought he had? Maybe someone used that ship since he was in his own from the old days? I also think Leia is far too suspicious. She seems so close to Rey, like she's her daughter or niece. I firmly believe Leia knows full well who Rey is, but she's keeping it a secret for some unknown reason. And Snoke said he bridged Rey and Kylo's mind to they could talk...but what about after Snoke died? Were the effects still there, or were they really doing it on their own? Luke and Leia were extremely close, they had a very tight bond even after all those years of being separated. Could the same thing be for Kylo and Rey? Could Rey have been too young to put in the Jedi academy and when Kylo turned to the Dark Side, Leia made sure she was safe from the First Order and the Sith? All very interesting points that I can't wait to see unfold!

Overall, a movie I would definitely recommend and watch again. It was incredibly enjoyable and I loved it and it held lots of fantastic moments in it. I may not have felt the same way walking out of the theatre as I did when I saw The Force Awakens, I think more things annoyed me or didn't make sense in this movie compared to episode 7, but nonetheless, I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure how this really fits into the story line, or what they're going to do in episode 9 to come back after all that happened, but I'm excited to see it. It's more of a standalone movie than part of the series, in my opinion, but for a watch nonetheless. 7.5/10.
