Hamas hacks Israeli soldiers’ cellphones posing as attractive women on social media

Operatives for the Hamas terrorist group hacked into dozens of Israeli combat soldiers’ cellphones by posing as attractive Israeli women on Facebook.

Using Israeli women’s photos and identities stolen from social media, the operatives would initiate personal and intimate relationships with the soldiers and then ask them to download what they said was an application in order to video chat, according to reports.

The fake app gave #Hamas control over the soldiers’ phones, allowing activation by the terrorist group of the camera and microphone, and access to contacts, videos and photos, as well as Whatsapp conversations and emails. The soldiers were not aware that their phones had been hacked.

The #hacks were discovered following investigations by the Shin Bet security service and the Israel Defense Forces’ Information Security Department and #Cyber Defense Unit. The Shin Bet and #IDF said the damage was minimal and believe all of the affected phones have been identified, according to Ynet. Most of the soldiers hacked were low level.

Hamas also gathered intelligence by following soldiers on social media and collecting the sensitive information they posted publicly, The Times of #Israel reported, citing an unnamed IDF officer.

Current and former soldiers have hundreds of #Facebook and #Whatsapp groups to stay in contact.

Hamas, the Islamist terrorist group that won Palestinian legislative elections last month, recently posted on its official website a video which presents the parting video messages of two Hamas suicide bombers, with one of them stating that “we are a nation that drinks blood” and that Hamas promises to drink the blood of Jews “until we have quenched our thirst with your blood … until you leave the Muslim countries.” The second suicide bomber is seen assisted in dressing by his mother as he prepares himself for a suicide terrorist attack (Hamas website, courtesy of Palestinian Media Watch).

Hamas’ Charter calls for the murder of Jews (Article 7), the destruction of Israel (Article 15) and affirms that it waging a global struggle against Jews who are trying to destroy Islam, citing in support the classic anti-Semitic forgery, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion (Article 32). Since September 2000, Hamas has been responsible for the murder of nearly 500 Israelis and the maiming of thousands more in five years of suicide bombings, drive-by shootings and missile assaults. Other videos recently mounted on the Hamas website includes one that appeared just before the elections and features Hamas leader Khaled Masha’al stating that Hamas will continue with terrorism and work for Israel’s destruction, promising that “the homeland is returning through blood” (Hamas website, courtesy of Palestinian Media Watch).

Hamas the Democrats?

The Independent covers an interview given to a Palestinian newspaper by Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman where he threatens to “completely destroy” Hamas if it starts another war with Israel.

According to the Independent [below, first image]:

While Hamas did win local elections in 2006, the terror organization only took over the Gaza Strip in 2007 as a result of a violent coup d’etat, which involved throwing Fatah members off rooftops and ejecting the Palestinian Authority from Gaza.

Instead, The Independent’s readers are given the false impression that Hamas controls the Gaza Strip by way of the ballot box rather than the bullet. Ergo, Lieberman could be seen to be threatening a democratically elected regime in Gaza, which is certainly not the case.

We’ve contacted The Independent and asked for this lack of context and selective omission to be addressed. Watch this space.

#Israel’s air force hit a #Hamas post in the #Gaza Strip on Monday after a rocket was fired from the Palestinian enclave toward Israel, the military said.

“A rocket was fired at southern Israel from the Gaza Strip,” an army statement said, but “no rockets hit Israeli territory”.

On Monday Israel’s far-right defence minister, #AvigdorLieberman, told a Palestinian newspaper Israel’s next war in Gaza would be its last “because we will completely destroy them”.

Lieberman however said he had no intention of starting a new war in Gaza, which would be the fourth since 2008.

He urged Palestinians to pressure Hamas to “stop your crazy policies”.

“As minister of defence, I would like to clarify that we have no intention of starting a new war against our neighbours in the Gaza Strip or the West Bank, Lebanon or Syria,” he said in the interview with Jerusalem-based Al-Quds newspaper.

“But in Gaza, like the Iranians, they intend to eliminate the state of Israel… If they impose the next war on Israel, it will be their last. I would like to emphasise again: It will be their last confrontation because we will completely destroy them.”

Analysis: Hamas Operating From Turkey as Usual Despite Ankara's Promises

...In the negotiations that led to the reconciliation agreement, Israel's representatives insisted on the exile of Hamas's military branch from Turkey. This was a condition that Israel's intelligence community - the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), IDF and Mossad - were adamant about. Turkey refused the request outright, initially. Ankara claimed that it did not agree with the distinction made by Israel between Hamas's military and political branches. In Turkey's opinion, Hamas is one organization, whose struggle against the Israeli occupation is justified and who they certainly do not see as a terrorist organization. The Turks later softened their stance, and agreed to exile Salah al-Arouri, the commander of the Kassam Brigades delegation in Turkey.

Arouri, who is from the Hebron area, was one of the senior Hamas military wing officials in the West Bank. He was arrested by the Shin Bet and served two sentences in Israeli prisons for involvement in terror. He was expelled to Jordan, which refused to accept him, and from there moved on to Syria. With the start of the civil war in Syria and the closing of Hamas headquarters in Damascus, he moved to Turkey. He established a headquarters there that recruited terror operatives in Jordan and the West Bank, as well as providing them with funds for weapons. Arouri also issued the order to his operatives in the West Bank to kidnap Israelis. In one such attempt, three yeshiva students were kidnapped and murdered in Gush Etzion in June 2014. The murder was the catalyst that led to the third Gaza war in the summer of 2014 (Operation Protective Edge).

...From Turkey, Arouri went to Qatar, which is also a Hamas base, albeit a distant one. Since he left Damascus in the wake of the Syrian civil war, Qatar has hosted Hamas politburo chief Khaled Meshaal.

...Even before the reconciliation deal was signed, my colleague Alex Fishman of Yediot Aharonot estimated that Turkey had no intention of expelling Hamas military wing operatives from its territory. Indeed, according to defense establishment information, the headquarters established by Arouri in Turkey is operating as usual, and at its helm is a single commander, who continues to receive orders from Arouri in Qatar. Military wing operatives continue to travel in and out of Turkey as they always did and are planning terror attacks against Israel.

Terrorist with Close Ties to Iran Named New Leader of Hamas in Gaza

A terrorist with close ties to Iran has been installed as the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, The Times of Israel reported Monday.

Imad al-Alami will take over from current Gaza chief Ismail Haniyeh, who is moving to Qatar, likely in order to replace Khaled Meshaal as leader of the terror group’s political bureau.

Not much is known about al-Alami. He was born in Gaza and lived for many years in Iran. He moved to Syria in 2008 before returning to Gaza after the Syrian Civil War began in 2011. He was the last Hamas leader to leave Damascus after Hamas split with Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.

...Although there has sometimes been dissent among the terror group’s leaders over its ties with Iran, in recent months signs have emerged that it is moving closer into the Islamic Republic’s orbit. A number of Hamas officials met with Iranian diplomats in Beirut in September, pledging to face the “Zionist threat” together. The following month, Gaza-based Hamas official Mahmoud al-Zahar said that the terror group sought to “enhance and develop” its ties with Iran in order to prepare for a new war with Israel.

Hamas, Palestinian Authority Target Journalists Ahead of Election

Palestinian journalists are at the top of the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Hamas hit-list in the crackdown occurring alongside preparations for the Palestinian local and municipal elections, scheduled for October 8.

The crackdown is part of an ongoing campaign by the two rival parties to silence critics in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Neither Hamas nor the PA tolerates a free and independent media -- especially on the eve of a crucial election that could have far-reaching political implications in the Palestinian arena.

A Hamas victory in the upcoming elections would be catastrophic for President Mahmoud Abbas and his Palestinian Authority. Such an electoral outcome would be tantamount to a vote of no-confidence in their policies and performance.

Hamas, for its part, is investing a huge amount of resources in the election campaign, in hopes that the results would further boost its standing among Palestinians. Hamas fears that a defeat would undermine its power in the Gaza Strip and pave the way for its collapse.

As the election campaign heats up, it is clear that Hamas and the PA agree on one thing: intensifying their repressive measures against Palestinian journalists.
