Teachers and parents of teens and young adults with ADHD: Dealing with defiance? Here are ways to de-escalate.
Lack of communication is one of the reasons why older students act out. It stems from underlying causes that become more serious as time progresses. We are the ones who are in control.
*Say "Good", but why? Include fact-based praise that's uneasy to dismiss.
*Build skills in reaching out, asking for help. Support to reduce feeling frozen and stupid.
*Skip the hard work until later. Let them take charge, reducing dependency.
*Use data to disprove negative thinking. Ask how hard it would be to complete task before they begin.
*Ask open-ended questions. Avoid yes and no answers.
"Our kids" often suffer from anxiety issues. Remember that it inhibits the ability to learn.
