שותף באופן ציבורי -Xbox One S: The Best Console You Don't Need
That's not to say I won't buy one. I probably will. I mean, the new Xbox is easily the best-looking video game system made in a long time. The Elite controllers are a wide awake dream for anyone who likes video games. And the new HDR abilities are apparently significant! I'm quite surprised by that. It's well known that the jump from 1080p to 4K is all but invisible even on large televisions, but that the new color dept can have a readily apparently difference is, really, great!
Yeah, it's fun to be some cynical hater who gets to rant at tech companies trying to sell us the new hotness that's really no better than the old hotness. But it actually sucks that things weren't getting better. It sucks that we weren't experiencing progress. Yes, it's annoying when each iPhone completely obviates all previous iPhones, but it's definitely exciting.
But before this post just turns into a garbled, rambling shit show that ends with me crying about how I remember when Mario 1 was new and I'm old, let's break down the new Xbox piece by piece.
The Hardware: God sweet damn, it's pretty. Every detail is like a classic video game system with a sheen of modern hotness and maturity spread over it. The pattern on the side is crazy attractive and one of the best examples of how tastefully applied textural visuals, can turn an otherwise drab shape into something exciting.
The guts have also received a bump in power that works out to as much as 15%. Since many games were not limited by the software, but by simply hitting the rev limiter of the GPU, an increase in power will have a material effect on gameplay. Obviously, this isn't true for all games, since many of them are limited in software to operate at 60 or 30 frames per second.
The Software: Whether the speed increase in the UI is a result of the increased power of the system or the recent software update is unknown, but it's faster, and that's great. Snappy UI, especially when using a less-than-ideal interface like a video game controller, is critically important. it's also something that, even with the newest versions of the UI's, neither the PlayStation nor Xbox has nailed it. To be fair, the same can be said of Roku, Amazon, Apple, and every other company out there. The failure of the UI's may be one of the key reasons why smart TV's have yet to take off. They continue to be a technological also-ran, behind cell phones, laptops, desktops, and tablets.
The Games: What games? There are no games that support 4K or HDR yet. As such, this is truly just an Xbox One.
The Bad Bits: Perhaps the biggest problem with the new S is that Project Scorpio is only a year away. And it looks very similar to what Microsoft did with the Xbox and Xbox 360, where plans to refresh the original Xbox almost immediately evolved into a completely new system released much faster than traditionally happened. When Scorpio comes out, it will only be about four years after the release of the Xbox One, less than the five years that is traditional, and far less than the eight years between the 360 and the One.
I also see the loss of the Kinect port as bad. Obviously, the Kinect was a failure from a sales perspective. It wasn't a killer app. It was expensive. Its voice commands failed frequently, and its motion commands were a disaster. Most of the games that are best suited to the Kinect were music and dance games that were part of a craze that ended in 2010. Its forced inclusion likely had a part to play in the Xbox One's ass-kicking by the PS4.
But it was awesome technologically! It was different, it was new, it was a glimpse of a future for human computer interaction that felt more than some geek load blown by a group of research students at MIT. It could also be hacked by makers and at-home researchers for amazing applications. It enabled creation in a way that few other things from the video game world had done before.
As I said above, no television-based UI has nailed it. None. They are all clunky in parts, outright shitty in others, and only scale the heights of mediocrity at best. The Kinect at least offered another way. I don't know whether it was a blind alley or would have succeeded with more research, but it was at least a different road.
The loss of the Kinect is a loss for geeks everywhere. I can only hope that Microsoft does not give up on research in it.
The Ugly Bits: While the Xbox supports 4K, not all 4K supports 4K, and how 4K is supported is different everywhere. That's a strange sentence, but it effectively illustrated how much of a pooch screw the current 4K landscape is. Hardware sold years ago as 4K compatible, isn't. Fuck, hardware sold last year as 4K isn't really 4K.
Moreover, there's next-to-no content in 4K, be it games or movies. It makes the whole promise of 4K not only hollow, but also unfulfilled. And moreover, the transition from DVD to HD-DVD and Blu Ray was a disaster, with tens of millions of people still relying on DVD since the differences were so small. I think we are going to see that effect only magnified. The differences from DVD to Blu Ray were small, from Blu Ray to 4K is borderline not there.

The easy answer is "probably not" — but you just might want one anyway.
