Child prodigy Reese Rose is one to watch at Ontario Figure #Skating championships

The Ontario Figure Skating championships will be held in Kingston this weekend, and favored to win the under-12 Juvenile ladies division is Reese Rose from the Gananoque Figure Skating Club.

Rose is only nine years old.

“I love figure skating, I love performing, I love the jumps and spins. I love everything about it,” said Rose, who lives in Lansdowne, about 10 kilometres east of Gananoque.

Cloverdale #Skating Club prepares to skate down memory lane

This year, the Cloverdale Skating Club is taking a trip through their 20 years of ice skating shows with their performance A Skate Down Memory Lane.

“We’re doing something a little bit different by doing a retrospective of previous ice shows,” Aly Nickel, the club’s ice show chair, said. “There’ll be little vignettes of each mirroring the past.”

Every two years, the skating club gets together to put on an elaborate ice show. Over the past 20 years, the club has seen performances of Mary Poppins, the wild west, the Lion King, the Little Mermaid, fairy tales and even a disco-themed night.

South Dakota's largest figure #skating competition held in Sioux Falls

South Dakota’s largest figure skating competition was held in Sioux Falls this weekend.

Roughly 160 skaters from seven different clubs in the region competed Sioux Falls Ice Classic at the Scheels Iceplex.

“With the Olympics happening this year, a lot more kids get interested in it and they look for something like this,” organizer Kristi Feucht from the Sioux Falls Figure Skating Club said.

Ashley Wagner on confidence, her future and expanding access to figure #skating

Figure skating is a sport for the elite. Some would say even more so than hockey, golf and tennis, the requirements for participation -- equipment, costumes, lessons, access to ice -- make the sport a non-option for some less privileged communities.

Figure Skating in Harlem is a nonprofit looking to address those barriers. Founded in 1997, the organization promotes academic and athletic achievement among young girls of color living in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx who might not necessarily think a sport like figure skating is meant for them. Exposure to the sport as part of an after-school program has helped to increase participants' confidence, improve their grades and get them to elite schools like Howard University, according to Melissa Czarnik, marketing and communications manager of Figure Skating in Harlem.
