#China will join erstwhile rival #Japan as well as #SouthKorea this week at a long-delayed summit to boost trade cooperation against the threat of President Donald #Trump’s protectionist policies. China and Japan, #Asia's two largest economies, have been trying to reset ties after years of increasingly bitter disputes over a group of uninhabited islets in the East China Sea and the legacy of Japan's invasion of China before and during World War II.

Japanese Prime Minister #ShinzoAbe will host Chinese Premier #LiKeqiang and South Korean President #MoonJaein in Tokyo on Wednesday (May 9). Summits bringing the three countries together were originally planned as an annual event but the most recent one was held in 2015. The gathering will also be the first visit of a Chinese premier to Japan since 2011.

The rapidly evolving situation on the Korean Peninsula and #US threats to free trade were likely agenda items as #China, #Japan and #SouthKorea sat down Wednesday (May 9) for their first trilateral summit in more than 2 years.

The meeting comes amid a flurry of developments on the Korean peninsula. North Korean leader #KimJongUn met Moon on April 27 and Chinese President #XiJinping earlier this week. U.S. Secretary of State #MikePompeo flew to Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, early Wednesday on an unannounced visit. Japanese Prime Minister #ShinzoAbe, in opening remarks, praised the efforts of Xi and South Korean President #MoonJaein. Abe and Moon are meeting with Chinese Premier #LiKeqiang, the No. 2 official after Xi.
