One constant we found with everyone we spoke to abt getting help from family or giving help to family was SHAME. People don’t like to talk about money, ESPECIALLY about debt. And people don’t like to talk about privilege, and how smoothly it travels from generation to generation

I want our newsrooms and our audiences to get comfortable being uncomfortable a bit more, and be open to hearing voices that aren't their own. Voices they don't get to control. (Also, stop emailing me talking about how I need to stop saying "like" so much. PLEASE.) /FIN

The "diversity, BUT" critique of my colleague's voice isn't too much better than saying, "Sure, I'm all for gay rights, as long as they don't, like, kiss in public." Or, "Sure, all about women in the workplace, but I should never have to see them breastfeed."

True representation - true diversity - is inherently uncomfortable. It's supposed to be. Feeling and experiencing things you haven't before isn't supposed to always make you feel 100 percent GOOD. ANd it isn't always supposed to sound and feel the way YOU want it to feel.

Very well-meaning people have convinced themselves that THEY get to set the parameters of representation for groups they don't even really know at all. Regions they don't even really know at all. People they don't even really know at all.

If you only want to hear Black people that sound just like the white voices you've heard before, or you only want to see coverage of a place like Africa (which is hundreds, thousands of DIFF'T places) that feels like what we've heard before, you don't really want diversity.
