Many (but not all) NOAA (US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research agency) subagency sites block VPNs. I'll have to check and see whether they work with Tor.

building a bourne-shell compiler front-end for guile. it'll help guix cut down on magic binaries used to bootstrap the distro.

I have some calendars on Google calendar that are shared that I want on my android phone which doesn't have google play services installed.
- install ics-droid, barcode scanner
- copy super long super secret google calendar url
guix environment --ad-hoc qrencode -- qrencode -t asciii $CALENDAR_URL- scan qr code with phone
- copy url to ics-droid

google has something going on with caldav and oauth that isn't really supported by most of the *dav syncing apps

My school changed its name a year or two ago. I signed up with the old name and submitted paperwork with the new name. Got the "name mismatch" email, and now hopefully they won't freak out that I've changed the school's name rather than my paperwork :/

if done right, the food coloring will very slowly fall through the oil as a sphere before hitting the water and changing its color

trying out programs

trying out a new program on Guix is incredibly easy. On Debian: sudo apt install foo; foo; sudo apt remove foo. On Guix: guix build foo; /./gnu/store/...foo/bin/foo and you're good to go. No root needed, no install & uninstall, just experimenting with new programs.
Now to play more with calcurse while I decide if I want to have it available or actually install it.
I think that people who haven't tried Guix don't believe just how easy it is!
Not to mention that this use case is directly addressed by `guix environment --ad-hoc`.

domain name registration

My wife is looking to register a .com domain name for her company and I'm looking for recommendations. We're looking at email and a (probably staticly generated) website. I'll probably end up running the site on digital ocean (and maybe the mail server too).
I know of peligon/webline where I registered my .co.il domain, and gandi.net, which might mean I wouldn't actually need to host the email, just route all hers through gmail. Anyone have good/bad experiences to share?
we went with gandi. e-mail forwarding with aliases works great, and we'll work out the website some time later.
I like gandi a lot. They have email that comes with the domain, but it's kinda small (1GB storage, etc).
You can purchase additional storage on to of the one gigabyte if you need it, too.
