Louisville, Kentucky - Waterworks Temple
The Louisville Waterworks opened in 1860 to provide clean drinking water to the city, whose citizens previously drank untreated water directly from the Ohio River or smaller creeks. Designed to be a showcase and a point of interest for the rest of the nation, it was built to resemble a classical Greek or Roman temple, complete with faux marble columns and statues representing various mythological deities. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971.
It's still an active pumping facility, but sections of it are open for tours and the original pump house is now a museum.
Approximately two miles southeast of it, in Reservoir Park, is a pumping station designed to look like a German mansion.

- Meteor City, Arizona - World's Longest Map of Route 66
As other reviewers have said, the map is three-quarters missing and the dome has been vandalized. However, it did have one last hurrah on the Viceland skateboarding show "Abandoned," where it was featured along with nearby Two Guns/Canyon Diablo and Twin Arrows. The host spoke to a group of Native Americans who explained the insult that stores such as this one -- and here they pointed to a still-standing part of a sign that read, "Pow Wow Blankets, $5" -- were to their people. It was pretty fascinating. When I went, the dreamcatcher was still there, two parts of the map/board were somewhat standing, and the trailers behind the dome had been ripped apart. The interior of the dome had been vandalized as well.
[Rom Deussen, 04/20/2017]We believe the map was cursed when it was repainted in 2002 as a publicity stunt for a hotel chain. The new version was lousy, and the map and its trading post fell into ruin.
