NCIBA Spring Gathering - April 10, 2016
The NCIBA produces an annual spring workshop—a daylong program which includes a variety of sessions dealing with topics of concern to our members. Additional workshops and seminars are also presented at our annual Fall Discovery Show.
Program details:
8:30-9:00 Registration & continental breakfast
Come early, pick up your badge, say hi to friends, and enjoy coffee, fruit, and pastries.
9:00-10:00 ABA Forum
ABA CEO Oren Teicher will lead an open forum and discussion of industry issues. Attendees help guide the agenda of the forum, so please come with questions and comments.
10:15 – 11:45 ABA presents: Indie Bookstores and the New Localism: What You Can Do
Data from a recent study, commissioned by ABA, suggests that the localism movement is now at a transition point, and that indie booksellers, indie retailers, and our colleagues in the Shop Local/Local First movement have an opportunity to refocus their efforts and bring about real change in public policy and perception. During this session, ABA will report on the Civic Economics study "Amazon and Empty Storefronts: The Fiscal and Land Use Impact of Online Retail," and provide important resources and data to empower everyone connected with independent bookselling to communicate the “new” localism message to colleagues, customers, community members, elected officials, and the media.

Tools will be available for you write down what worked for you in the past, what you want to do this year, any great ideas you want to share to help boost this national program and create even more success for all those participating.

11:45-12:30 Author Reception
We have shifted the location and format this year but as always it’s BYOB — Bring Your Own Bookbag! We’ve invited #? authors and illustrators, all with new titles-in stores now or soon on the way-to meet you all and sign copies of their books or galleys. This is a great opportunity to chat with the authors and to introduce them to your stores. The special needs community is surprisingly vast, from those with a physical or mental disability to those in search of mirror books for minority readers. Luckily books can be great therapy. But what books are best and is there appropriate language to discuss sensitive topics? Our panel—bibliotherapist, bookseller, parent and/or librarian—will offer solutions to help all customers feel at home in your store, including training staff and curating a thoughtful inventory to address autism, grieving, bullying, gender identity, and other concerns beyond the mainstream.
3:00-4:00 Finding Great Booksellers & Keeping Them Happy
Panelists: Stephen Sparks, Green Apple Books, innovative programming-Amy Stephenson, Booksmith/Shipwreck, innovative programming-Louise Barros, Bookshop Santa Cruz, receiving, back-of-the-house innovation. Moderator: Tina Ferguson, Face in a Book
How do you hire and then keep good booksellers given the limited pay? Are there other motivators for working in a bookstore? Autonomy, creative projects, flexibility, proximity to books and authors…what are the things that sweeten the pie? Come learn what other bookstores are doing to hire and keep the best. And what are some of the things you’ve done?
4:15 – Please join us as we raise a glass* to say farewell to the beautiful amazing space here in the Presidio that has served the NCIBA office and the membership so spectacularly well over many years!
We will also announce the NCIBA Books of the Year-posters available for stores at that time (perhaps even have an author or two on hand to accept their awards).
Local publishers Yellow Pear Press (distributed by PGW) will be on hand to showcase their title:
Farmsteads of the California Coast . Meet the publisher, the author and even a photographer.
Enjoy food featured from the books.
