Ooh, Bridge to Terebithia is wonderful, too. Wrenching, but so completely real. No other young adult fiction can touch it, in my opinion. Jane Eyre is similarly emotionally powerful.

I agree, I enjoyed how the characters were 'real' and had real emotions. I liked looking at the way the problems they faced affected them and how they developed.
