Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
Jane Eyre
Read in August 2016
I often think of classics as "required reading," usually accompanied by a barely suppressed groan. Because, surely, they can't actually be any good. I'm not sure why I've always associated well-known and well-loved classics as such, but I suppose... Read full review

Caitlin Persuasion is my all-time favorite "classic." Not one of the usual Jane Austen reads, but definitely my favorite of hers. (Shortly followed by P&P and S&S). Seriously, read Persuasion.

And if you like it... "For Darkness Shows the Stars" is a YA retelling that makes you feel all the same feels. <3

Experiment BL626 I hate classics. They're far from my cup of tea. That said, Jane Eyre is a mighty exception. It's the only classic I have ever read out of free will and re-read for joy. The angst was maddening, but the ending made it worthwhile. Good to see you enjoy the book too. :)

Katie So glad you enjoyed Jane Eyre, Steph. I remember when the movie re-make came out (around 2011-ish?) and I scored a pre-screening ticket. I sat in the back of the theater and bawled my eyes out, all by myself! It's a truly compelling, beautiful story.

If you're curious about Mr. Rochester's first wife, I recommend Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. I just bought it myself, and it's purported to tell the madwoman's story.
