Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
Jane Eyre
Read in July 2016
Jane Eyre is one of those books everyone says you have to read one day, often mentioned in one breath along with classics like Pride and Prejudice or Wuthering Heights, and I agree. This is an important novel about female independence, the develop... Read full review

Murf the Surf I agree we should all read this book at some point; I enjoyed it immensely ! I'd visited the Bronte estate and graveyard in the west yorkshire moors last year. (The graveyard was creepy, as if from that time period).

Cecily Your "issue" is a big one, but I'm glad it didn't blind you to the importance and passion of the book. Good review, Councillor.

Brian I thought about this author yesterday when I read about feminist criticism. I wonder how her works stand against this type of criticism. I've never read her but i saw one of her movies, and I think feminists may not like her stuff. I'm not sure though because I've just been introduced to it.

Cecily I don't know about formal, academic feminist critiques, but considering this is the work of a rural parson's daughter, in the first half of the nineteenth century, it's remarkably transgressive, in terms of Jane's independence of mind and spirit, and in showing so many Christians in a very negative light.

Wow! Sounds like a great read! I don't know much about criticism, but the book said they fight against "patriarchism," or stereotypical gender roles forced on women by society. In the movie, "Pride and Prejudice," I noticed a culture strong in patriarchism, but the main character stands up against the "system." Thank you both. It's going on my TBR!

Brian And...I realized Austin didn't write this...but I think they write about similar stuff...right?

Cecily Austen is sugar-coated compared with Bronte, imo, and you can't really analyse the author's intent in any detail from a film, which is one or two people's modern, commercial interpretation. (That's not to say film adaptations are necessarily bad, but they are different, sometimes very much so.)

Thank you. I must look into this author.

Ron Got to give you praise for another fine review. Bronte's book has certainly withstood the test of time. I feel a little guilty for never trying it!

Thank you, Sushi! And yes, I am definitely in a classic mood right now. I have yet to review Lolita by Nabokov and Ethan Frome by Wharton which I've both finished recently. :D

Thank you, Henry! I am still only starting out with British literature, since I've never had to read any of those classics in school and never felt interested in them until more recently. Being from Germany, I am more familiar with the big German classics.

Thank you, Cecily! Since the issue I mentioned didn't appear until late into the novel, it was still possible to enjoy most of it - even easier so because of the author's mesmerizing and captivating writing style. Parts of her prose really stunned me with their eloquence. It is a novel I can see myself rereading one day.
