So the blurb on this was kind of vague...add to that my vague reading of said ambiguity...and this was my face until about 20% into this bad boy:
Not to say that the plot was super complicated...not to say that I am just retarded (although that might be argued).
Just meaning that I wasn't quite sure where this was going.

Next to Never is nothing like I expected it to be. The story is from Quinn Caruther’s POV, but it’s not completely Quinn’s story (from what I understand, her full length story is yet to come). Wow I read this novella cover to cover last night. I’m still thinking about how brilliantly Penelope Douglas gifted the untold story of Katherine and Jason while in the present we are introduced to teenage Quinn. Quinn is their daughter and sister to Jared, Madoc, and Jax.

I was so excited to read Next to Never, since I love this series.Each book gives you something and the characters were all loveable.Penelope did an amazing job with this one as well!!She is so talented and her books are addictive!!

I'll probably be in the minority here with 3 star rating but this was a bit of a downfall for me...i went in expecting someting else (obviously more Quinn and Lucas) but what i got was a messy story of Quinn's parents love affair, as Quinn reads her mom's journal, figuring out that it is actually a story about her parents...and how they've met, what they went through and how they finally found the guts to stand up for themselves and be able to look themselves in the mirror first, face up ...more
Next to Never is told from Quinn’s POV, Katherine (Jared and Jax’s mom) and Jason’s (Madoc’s dad) seventeen year old daughter. This isn’t really Quinn’s story, it’s the romance and history of Katherine and Jason, but there is definitely a set up for her story to come next. Katherine and Jason’s story was passionate, at times toxic and heartbreaking, but this is a romance so you know ultimately there’s a HEA! Next to Never is a story within a story. It's told in Quinn Caruthers's point of view (you'll get to meet her on Aflame) but the real story in this novella is about the mysterious book she received from an anonymous author. As she gets to read it, everything sounds familiar and she's going to find out who the author is.

4.25 to 4.5 Falling Hard for the start of this journey....
Penelope Douglas is the only author that I literally have to lock out the world to read. I have to read every single word to ensure I got everything...and that I didn't miss one single piece of prose that she creates because you never know when it will be over...or when it will really start.

I finished reading this series last year and absolutely loved every single book and character that Penelope wrote. With such addicting romances, I was so excited to see that Penelope was releasing a new novella in the series. And that cover?! I knew I had to read it ASAP!

I think if I was able to move to a fictional location-it would be Fall Away Lane I haven't just read this series, I've devoured it. I love the flawed characters, the raw emotions, the regrets and mistakes and scars. So getting the chance to read about the next generation just feeds my appetite for more.

Penelope Douglas is in my top 3 favorite authors ever, and with good reason. Her books are full of emotions, they bring me to the edges of my comfort zone and then some – and I love it. Not many books do speak to me on such a personal level. The Fall Away series is a favorite of mine. Like, top five. And now, it's time for a new generation, which I'm ecstatic for! Next to Never is an excellent transition between the two, and the perfect intro for the newer characters. It's a quick read, but fully satisfying.
I love Quinn and the different relationships she has with various family members. It's especially fun seeing Madoc, Jared, and Jax as older brothers. But it's really cool how we get to know Quinn while intertwining her parents st ...more

To be very honest I liked it, but there where parts that I rather not read about.
So I didn't love it. This was my least favorite of this series too just because of particular scenes.
But on the other side now I understand everything a bit better too.
But like the great author she is she makes you forget the things you dislike. So I enjoyed it and now I'm really looking forward to Quinn and Lucas their story but also Dylan her story. I must admit my heart hurts for Hunter. I don't know what's gonna ...more

I really thought this was going to be Quinn's story. I didn't sign up for the story about Jared's mom and Madoc's father. In all honesty, I don't really care about them. And I didn't like the story. This is my least favorite Penelope Douglas book so far. I hope that Quinn gets her own story really soon.
