A debut historical fantasy that recasts Jane Austen’s beloved Pride & Prejudice in an imaginative world of wyverns, dragons, and the warriors who fight alongside them against the monsters that threaten the kingdom: gryphons, direwolves, lamias, banshees, and lindworms.

They say a Rider in possession of a good blade must be in want of a monster to slay—and Merybourne Man

Pride and Prejudice and Dragons!

If you are a fellow P&P fan you can imagine the scope of my excitement for this book. And now after I've finished it a couple of hours ago I can finally say that I mostly liked the author's revision of the original story, but it was not enough for me to make me not to return in my head to favorite scenes from P&P while reading Heartstone.

Just like in P&P in this book we have a world of high society, ladies and gentlemen and balls, of course. But right

This book is...odd. There are talking dragons, "Darcy" has a mohawk neck-braid, "Lizzy" plays with Hobgoblins, and griffons are roasted on the spit. Yet the plot outline follows the BBC Pride and Prejudice miniseries (not the book) so very, very closely. That is not the problem, however. What it is missing is real emotional tension and depth of character.

Three generous stars for some unique (albeit strange) ideas and a hearty attempt at a reimagining.

A Pride and Prejudice retelling. With Dragons.

WHY THE FUCK DID NOBODY TELL ME ABOUT THIS?!

*My Thoughts*

Elle Katharine White's Heartstone is a story that reimages Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. This is a world where there are two types of beings exist; Tekari, sworn enemies of humans, and Shani, friends of humans. There is something dangerous coming, and nobody quite knows what it wants. Instead of using zombies to tell her story as in Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, White uses a variety of beings from gryphon's, gnom

4.5 stars, I loved it! Great fantasy, excellent story and dragons, which automatically makes everything better!

This was pitched as a "Pride & Prejudice with dragons", which is a lot for any story to stand up to but this one managed incredibly well. While I don't exactly consider it a "retelling" of P&P, the parallels were wonderfully done and made the parts of the story that were all its own just that much more enjoyable!

I just read in another review that this is a standalone and that

Very original and refreshing. I love all things Austen, yet, I was not sure I would love this one after reading the synopsis to be honest. But all in all, it was a very interesting book. An epic and exciting adventure that was very different from what I expected over all. Did I love the Darcy in the story....why yes, yes I did.

Heartstone was a book that I wanted as soon as I saw and read about it. Pride and Prejudice told from a world populated with wyverns, dragons and warriors. Why would you not want this book? After all, it is a truth, universally acknowledged, that all stories can be improved with the addition of a dragon!

So, when I say this is a retelling, I really do mean that it follows along very similar lines to Pride and Prejudice but with releva

The nitty-gritty: An imaginative Pride and Prejudice retelling that will delight readers with its incredible world-building, deft characterizations and thrilling action.

When I heard this book described as “Pride and Prejudice with dragons,” my first reaction was “Yes!” But then I thought, “Huh? That sounds…weird?” This was an odd book for me because of the strange mix of elements that don't quite seem to fit together. And yet, I loved it! How can one book evoke such mixed feelings? Even as I was

Heartstone follows the trend of so many Austen-inspired novels: the outline of the plot is intact but so much of the charm and wit of the inspiration material is completely missing. In this modern age of 'tell but fail to actually show', we have to assume the heroine is intelligent and that the hero has depths that belie the harsh exterior since neither will actually be demonstrated. Dragons do not make up for the missin

Loved, loved, loved it! If you love Jane Austen and dragons, then this is the perfect book for you! It stays true to the original Pride & Prejudice (because it is a retelling of that book) but offers enough differences that it becomes an enjoyable story of a beloved and familiar tale with a darker and more fantastical spinoff rather than a complete copycat. I've read retellings of P&P where it's basically identical to the original with a little modern twist or something so you don't feel ...more

Pride and Prejudice retelling - Yes.
With hobgoblins? Still with you.
And Dragons? Alright, probably something to like here.

Except, it was all just, there. I kept reading simply because of my love of Pride and Prejudice. Granted, I haven't read the book, no, I watched the BBC show, with my Grandma, when I was 10-ish. I absolutely love it. Hrm, maybe I should give it(the book) a go, I was always worried it would ruin the show for me. There were things I liked, Aliza is still headstrong, Lady Catrio

Omg this was absolutely fantastic! Pride & Prejudice is my second favorite Jane Austen novel and to make it into a fantasy with dragons, wyverns, and other creatures was an absolutely brilliant idea! I loved all the characters especially the dragon Akarra! I would love to see what Elle would do with my favorite Austen novel, Persuasion!

“They say a Rider in possession of a good blade must be in want of a monster to slay—and Merybourne Manor has plenty of monsters.”

This book… was amazing!

I’m going to start by saying that I’m not usually a fan of epic historical fantasy it’s just too much for me to ingest and this cover just screams it with that dragon… but I knew I had to give it a try when I read it was touted as Pride & Prejudice meets dragons, wyverns and warriors!

From the very first page I was pulled into this story, a

***THIS BOOK WAS PROVIDED TO ME BY THE PUBLISHER BUT THIS IS NO WAY INFLUENCES MY OPINION***

This is the debut novel by Elle Katharine White and let me start by saying I think she has great potential, I am just not sure that it is fully realized in this book.

When this book arrived and I saw the cover and read the synopsis I'm not going to lie, my hopes may have gotten a little too high, which may have resulted in the following let downs.

For me, for the most part, this book read a little young. I

A 4-star read for this Pride and Prejudice fan, but I'd say 3.5 stars just as a fantasy historical romance, even w/o the fun of comparing and contrasting with the original. Some of the choices EKW made were unexpected and positive points.

I wanted to get the reading dates set before I forgot, but I'm not going to take the time for one of my typical long reviews at this moment -- tomorrrow, hopefully.

TPB read from the library, but I'll definitely be getting my own copy sometime, for re-reading!

I'm not sure how to rate this one. I love Pride and Prejudice, but if I wanted to read Pride and Prejudice, I would. With the exception of the world (dragons, etc.) this was Pride and Prejudice and obviously not nearly as good. Honestly, I was just BORED. The basic plot, the people, etc. was the EXACT SAME. There were a couple of surprises, sure, just because of the world being so different, but other than that, I didn't really enjoy this because I knew what was going to happen.

Lucked into an ARC of Heartstone, and I'm so glad that I did.

The story grabbed me right off with the hobgoblins going after the Mr. Darcy character in the opening scene. I found this book delightful. The women in this story, like the women in the original, have their places in their world, but they don't stay there. In this version they at least have far more scope.

My favorite part of Heartstone is the new take on the old characters from P&P. This is where you stop reading if you haven't r

This was an ARC provided by the publisher but the review is my own.

Pride and Prejudice is a literary classic that has helped inspire countless writers to create their own unique spin on the story. In Elle White's vision the story is given a touch of dragon fire and fantasy to bring a whole new chapter to Jane Austen's legacy.

Aliza Bentaine lives in a world where magical creatures co exist with humanity, working along side to battle against those dark creatures who seek to extinguish all who sta

Quite frankly, it was this gorgeous cover that piqued my interest in this novel. I'm in love with it, and I can't begin to express this love in coherent words. It's beautiful and says so many things about this novel.

I was also interested by the promise of "elements of Jane Austen's beloved Pride and Prejudice" (as advertised in the synopsis), but I wasn't prepared a full-blown retelling. That came as a surprise. I wasn't thrilled by how closely this novel follows the original storyline as it mad

I love retellings, and I'm always up for one based on Pride & Prejudice. But despite that, I've come to realize how rarely they meet my expectations. I've also discovered that my favorite kind of retellings are those that take the flavor of an original tale and blend it into something new, instead of trying to hit all the same plot points of the first story. Despite taking place in a world of dragons and hobgoblins and making "Darcy" a fierce warrior Rider and Aliza a Herbmaster,

Heartstone
By Elle Katharine White

Have you ever wished for a little more action in Pride and Prejudice? Well, Heartstone adds a fun fantasy twist that brings dragons, trolls, hobgoblins, gryphons and other fantastical beings into the mix. But all isn't fun and country dances - danger roams the countryside and those ready to wield a sword are called in to protect the local populations.

When Merybourne Manor finds itself at the mercy of a hoard of gryphon a band of riders is hired to rid them of thi

“I’ve been in many battles in my lifetime. I’ve slain monsters by the hundreds and won more victories than I can count, but against this there’s no defense. From the moment we met I tried fighting it—gods, I’ve tried. Nothing works. I thought I’d be safe at the other end of the country, but the minute I heard you were coming to Edan Rose I flew here as fast as Akarra would take me. I’m a Rider and you’re a nakla,” Daired said. “There’s nothing we have in common. There’s nothing we should have in common. Your birth, your bloodline, all of it—it’s beneath me. I know all of that, and it hasn’t changed a thing. I’ve lost, Aliza. You’ve defeated me.” 1 likes
