Those of you who follow my reviews regularly know that Truthwitch was one of my favorite reads last year and main protagonists Safiya & Merik even made it to my top favorite ships of 2016. To say that I was super excited to read sequel, would be an understatement. I simply could not wait to get my hands on Windwitch. So imagine my disappointment when it did not meet my expectations...

“Though we are safe with our friends near, we are safest with our enemies nearer.”
Wow, what an emotional ride this book was! I honestly must admit that mostly all my expectation about this book were based on Aeduan/Iseult relationship. And when I found out they will have shared chapters in this part, my joy was limitless. But, oh boy, this book had a couple of more surprises in store for me.
First of all, the world-building became wider,

I had completely forgotten how Susan Dennard writes such delightfully vivid and hilarious characters: "do all Hell-Bards waddle like a duck, or is it just you?"
This book felt a bit like the Falling Kingdoms series in that there are so many different characters and stories going that everyone only gets a little bit of progress in the book overall. A solid four stars to an amazing sequel. Windwitch took me to an eventful trip back to the Witchlands. As Alexandra Bracken has said, this is a world that I would want to inhabit forever.
This novel jumps back in where the first book ended if not a bit farther into the future. All four main characters: Safi, Iseult, Merik, and Aeduan, are separated creating a multi-perspective narration for the readers with one more character added. So although I despised Truthwitch, I'm probably going to read this still because I still so badly want to know more about Iseult and to see if I start enjoying this series any better because it has so much potential.
BUT WHY DOES THIS HAVE TO BE ABOUT MERICK. I FUCKING HATED MERICK, HE WAS THE WORST CHARACTER IN THE ENTIRE CAST OF CHARACTERS

WINDWITCH picks up pretty closely where TRUTHWITCH left off, which is to say, it hits the ground running. As you should recall, the first book ended rather explosively, so we're dealing with the (almost) immediate aftermath.
Merik, a broken shadow of himself, is newly arrived to Nubrevna (b/c death wish, as far as I can tell), and Safi and Iseult are for all intents and purposes at opposite ends of their world, with only their flashy-when-in-danger stones connecting them.

One of my goals for 2017 was to DNF books, instead of forcing myself to finish them, but I didn't expect to utilize that goal so soon, especially when I gave Truthwitch five stars.
DNF @ 50%
This is so god-awfully boring, I'm bribing myself with rewards every 5%. Also, I can smell an unnecessary romance/love triangle happening, and I'm not in the mood for a romantic lead to become a villain (I know SJM is this author's best friend, but still).

OooOooOoOOhhhh what a pretty coverrrrr *_*
The second book in The Witchlands Series, Windwitch, will completely shock and surprise readers in the absolute best of ways. The book has a slightly different tone from the first and takes the reader deeper into the fantastical world that has been introduced in Truthwitch. This story begins to give the series the feel of an epic saga, as it contains various points of view, characters, and subplots. There are numerous diverse characters as well in Windwitch, making this book both interesting and

I remember the ending of the previous book and the blurb of Windwitch seems spoiler-ish. It offers us something that would happen not at the beginning, but later. Or maybe Susan decided to fly over some events to these ones and give us flashbacks after that...

WE HAVE A GLORIOUS COVER
The wait for Windwitch was agonising to the extent that my uncontrollable bouncing may or may not have caused an actual earthquake across the world. Truthwitch killed me and I was prepared to be double-tapped by the follow-up novel. So it was unexpected when while I enjoyed the second book, I wasn’t blown away the way I wanted to be.
The story starts out with a bang— literally — and Merik is the first character re-welcomed into our lives. I obviously didn’t complain because I thought Merik was fa ...more

Props to Cassandra Campbell for narrating all of the characters. That is more than five different people with different races and backgrounds! I have never realized how many accents were present in the novel until now.
Clearly, I have been pronouncing some of the characters' names wrong such as Aeduan, spoken as "ey-dwin" and not "ey-duwan" (do correct me if I am wrong). It took me a while to get comfortable to some of the accents such as Safi's but overall, Campbell did a great job.

EDIT Sept 16, 2016: Discovered through my lovely friend Nastassja, here's a summary of what you can expect to happen in the highly anticipated Windwitch (source: Susan Dennard). Royal sibling rivalries, reluctant alliances, and survival in a land roamed by pirates sounds like a plot that will make your heart pound faster. If Aeduan and Iseult aren't cannon, I will freak out.

Oh my God, that cover took my breath away. And not just because this is going to focus on Merik and his Windwitchery (haha, see what I did there? My breath, the wind, his powers...? I'm hilarious. Don't deny it!). But *flails*. Merik was my favourite character so I'm more than a little eager to get my hands on this (read: dying).

Look at the cover!! Susan's killing the game... But Merik, really? I thought this was supposed to be a female-centric series? Disappointed tbh, because we all know Iseult is the real bae.
If you're in the mood for fantasy then READ THIS.
If not, then wait until you are.
This book was way better than the first one. The beginning was a blast, the characters were hilarious and a lot of things happened since Truthwitch.

I was excited to be sent a surprise early copy of this book. I had to start reading it immediately of course. I loved Truthwitch and couldn't wait for the sequel to release. It was well worth the wait! There is always the chance that the second book will not be as good as the first in the series and that was not the case here. If you were hoping for more fantasy in Windwitch your in luck.

“Merik swiveled his wrists slowly. At night, the temple was too dark to see the blood dripping from his arms, pooling on the granite flagstones. He felt it falling, though. Just as he felt the new, burned flesh on his hands stretching beneath torn gloves.
Yet even as pain shivered through his body, he couldn’t help but think: Only a fool ignores Noden’s gifts. For if Merik looked at this case of mistaken identity from the just the right angle, it could in fact all be seen as boon.
The assassin in the night. The fire on the Jana. The attack of a Waterwitch in Pin’s Keep. Each event had led Merik here, to Noden’s temple. To a fresco of the god’s left hand.
To the Fury.
Twice now, he’d been mistaken for that monstrous demigod, and twice now, it had worked in Merik’s favor. So why not continue using the fear invoked from that name? Was Merik not doing the Fury’s work by bringing justice to the wronged and punishment to the wicked? It was clear that Nubrevnans needed Merik’s help, and his sister Vivia…Well, she was stil out there. Alive. Wretched.
So was it not Merik’s moral duty to keep her off the throne? And he could do that if he could just prove she had indeed tried to kill him—that it was she who’d purchased that prisoner from Vizer Linday, and she who’d sent the prisoner to kill Merik.
Yes. This was right. This was Noden’s will. It throbbed in Merik’s wounds. It shivered across his scalp and down his raw back.
Take the god’s gift. Become the Fury.
Merik rose, stiff but strong, from the temple floor, and with a new purpose in his movements, he tugged his hood, his sleeves, his gloves into place. Then he turned away from the Fury’s gruesome fresco and set out to bring justice to the wronged.
Punishment to the wicked.”
