It's difficult going in to a book knowing you are going to read about heartbreak. But luckily, we also know that there will be great love to come afterwards.

I was so drawn to this book! I couldn't wait throughout the day until I could pick it up again and read. It is such a compelling story. Love given. Love taken. Love lost. Love found. SO GOOD!
I think it is the best story Josi S. Kilpack has told to date!
And to know it is based on the true love story of Sir Walter Scott makes it all the more captivating. LOVED. LOVED. LOVED. IT!

I got a very unexpected ARC of this from Shadow Mountain Publishing. I have no idea how it came to me, but I was pleasantly surprised, until I sat down to examine the book and the promotional material it came with, and realized that it was a romance. I have tried for years to read romances recommended to me by customers, co-workers, and library patrons, but I have always found them to be vapid and badly written. The dialogue always makes me cringe, and the outcomes are always unbelievable. Howev

3.5 stars for The Lady of the Lakes. The breaking down of Sir Walter Scott's romantic pursuits into his 'first love' & 'best love' is quite simply the right way to classify the approach to romantic love.
This book is based on the true love story of Sir Walter Scott. Interestingly, and because it's based on his life, half the books focus is on someone he is not intended to be with. Usually in a novel, or hopefully might I add, an author won't waste so much of the story on someone who ultimate ...more

Classics live Ivanhoe and Rob Roy fueled my love for history and deep tempestuous romance. Imagine my delight to see the author of such favorites is the hero of this sweet historical romance. I had no idea the man, Sir Walter Scott, had his own unrequited love story only to get a new chance so when I saw this one I just had to read it. It was a lovely story and the author did a fantastic job marrying fact and fiction.

Walter Scott had been nicknamed Wattie by his mother. She was very strict that he attend church and learn the “guid” word. It was difficult for him to keep still as he wanted to to be outside. He learned many stories in his youth and wanted to write about them. One day at age 19, he sees a young lady who totally enthralls him. As he boldly introduces himself, he learns her name is Williamina (Mina) and her mother is Lady Belches. The young lady appears to be only around ...more

There needs to be a Higher Star Rating for this book! So. Good.
Let me start by saying I devoured this book in one day. Devoured. I could not put it down. So. Good.
I cannot get enough of a good love story. It always makes it fun when it's a true story. That, I think is the reason I was unable to put it down. It's not like I didn't know the ending, but it was fascinating to read about what Sir Walter Scott went through on his pursuit of marriage.

Josi Kilpack does such a great job writing historical romances. Her Sadie Miller culinary mysteries are great as well, but this historical romance based on the life of Sir Walter Scott comes together so beautifully. The prologue, told from Walter's point of view, introduces the reader to his first reaction to the young Williamina Belshes, later Stuart. He is smitten from the very first time he lays eyes on her. Walter is determined to win Mina for his wife, but of course has to wait for her to r

There is something wonderous about this book. I was so completely enthralled with it and as I sit here thinking about the whole story, I find that outside of two very slow moving romances, there was not really a lot going on. No danger, no big heart pounding moments of suspense and no heart wrenching scenes of tragedy and dying. It's a simple tale of a man with a romantic heart, falling in love. Josi Kilpack has done an amazing job of crafting a story, so simplistic in it's base form, into somet

I love a good historical romance and because this one is based on actual lives in history, it made it all the more intriguing to me. Walter Scott lived a humble life and fell in love with someone far above his station. I think it's interesting to note that later in his life, he was knighted and became Sir Walter Scott. The love story unfolds as Walter and Mina are very young, as they grow, Mina begins to question if she is truly in love with Walter. The character of Walter is written as a man wh

When I was younger, I loved to reada series about the biographies of famous people in history. I loved learning more about these people and how their lives shaped or contributed to history. As I grew older, I found myself enjoying fiction a lot more and non-fiction a lot less and I hardly ever read those types of books anymore. However, I still find them very fascinating.

I really love the way that this author writes her historical fiction novels. This is another one of her Historical Proper Romance books, where she re-tells the love story of a famous person. I loved everything about it, including the chapter notes at the end, and I don't usually read those.

THE LADY OF THE LAKES by Josi S. Kilpack is the emotional, heartfelt, and true love story of Sir Walter Scott in the Eighteenth Century. Packed with beautiful description, the Scottish landscape and society at that time, springs to life and really makes the reader feel like they are there witnessing it all. But the most important and compelling part of this tale is Walter and his romantic ideals of love. Smitten at first sight with Mina, he plans his whole future with her at the ce ...more

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was so excited to get this book because I knew it would be a great read which it was and very hard to put down. I don't know much about Sir Scott from history but after reading this book, I want to understand and hopefully read his literary works especially poetry.

The Lady of the Lakes is another fantastic book by Josi Kilpack. These Historical Proper Romances are a wonderful way to get to know the people they are based on. Of course, they aren't true biographies, but I liked how Josi was able to take parts of what was known of Walter, Mina, and Charlotte and create a very compelling story. I enjoyed getting to know each character when the story would change point of views. I enjoyed the progression of the story, showing bits and pieces from each characte

When I was given the opportunity to review the latest novel in the Historical Proper Romance line, I was a bit hesitant because the pacing in the last one I read was a bit slow for my taste. However, I'm very glad I decided to give The Lady of the Lakes a try. I really enjoyed it! This true love story was very well written, eye opening, and entertaining.

I love historical fiction. When there is an emphasis on the history, it makes it a little more interesting.
This story is about the romances of Sir Walter Scott. I love to read, so I am familiar with his name, but I was not familiar with his life. I love that this book made him more real to me. He isn't just a name anymore. He was a man with hopes and dreams. At the beginning of the book his hopes revolve around Mina. She was from a "higher" social class than he was. "I believe in God and Christ and long-suffering, but I do not feel that all three must be so densely mashed together as they are for a Calvinist Sunday sermon."
What a great insightful opening into Walter Scott's mind. I had no idea what to expect from this book, but knowing Ms. Kilpack's previous writings, I knew to expect a story well told. Basically, Sir Walter Scott loved two women. Now you have to read the book to find out what happens. :)

Fabulous. It took me a few chapters to really get into the story, but once I did I couldn't put it down. Josi put a lot of research into this book (you can tell by the notes she has left at the end of the book), while still writing a beautiful story for the things we are unsure of. The lessons taught in this book about love are really sweet, and I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Sometimes, when I am highly anticipating a book to come out, I take longer to read it because I really want to savor it

This book was a beautiful escape. In it, I discovered history, culture, and romance in perfect measures. I enjoyed each of the characters, the development of their stories, and their decisions to find joy in their lives. The author did an amazing job melding imagination and speculation with what I could only imagine was dry historical information, and spinning it into a tale I felt honored to encounter. A very pleasant read that made me re-evaluate important themes of real love, joy, patriotism,

This incredibly engaging book describes the story of Sir Walter Scott as he finds his true love. Knowing very little about Scott, I found this book wonderfully informative while still telling an entertaining romance. The characters are beautifully written and the story flows well from chapter to chapter. Highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys historical fiction!

I wasn't sure if I was going to survive the heartache that I knew was coming. But thankfully, I did. This book is about real people so whatever happens, it hits me a little too close. Ugh. But the pain was so good.

This was a lovely read. I had a few other books I was supposed to be reading, but as I started this one, I couldn't put it down. I loved both Walter and Charlotte. It was lovely to read about them, about their concerns, their lives, their hopes and disappointments. JK imagined a lovely story about real people that spoke so truly and was so genuine and honest. Walter's (view spoiler) was tragic, sweet, a
